​Actually that's a big topic of debate between proponents and opponents of the death penalty with extreme opponents saying it costs more than $75 million more LWOP and extreme proponents saying it's actually way less. A 'general consensus' accepted by both sides is that the death penalty only actually costs about $1-7 million more than LWOP (Assuming that the case moves along the courts and doesn't get hung up in the process for years), which isn't that much more when considering the whole cost of LWOP can be around $50-70 million or upwards of $100 million depending on the age of the convict. In fact, if we were able to streamline death penalty cases and come up with a far more effective means of execution, we could probably get the cost down to only hundreds of thousands more than LWOP or even less than LWOP.

While I 'support' the death penalty, I think it's time to abolish it. It's archaic and does nothing to deter crime, and as someone said above this guy will become a martyr for Islam, and as evidence of the "evil western powers". I'm more in favor of non-torture, Guantanamo style detainment or ADX-Florence. Lock em up for 23 hours a day with no human contact in a soundproof cell, with CC tv, and let them in their individual outdoor "concrete swimming pools" for the one remaining hour. Give them just enough luxury to prevent their mind from breaking, allowing them to be fully aware at how deprived they will be for the rest of their life.

Some of these kids, the ones that are in gangs already, aren't scared at all. To them it's a part of life as they know, and they'll have some of their "homies" waiting for them. I do agree that it works to an extent, but it's not teaching them anything. I think their thinking behind it is right but their execution is completely flawed.

Each year there are around 200 officers that are charged for various criminal acts and negligence. Tell me how police officers are rarely being held accountable.
