CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

Many have seen those dirt bikes and ATVs racing up and down the highway and in some east side communities.

Now, Cleveland police officers are now equipped with bikes of their own to help catch the disruptive riders.

"This a dual purpose motorcycle. So, it is designed to be ridden on and off road," said dirt bike patrol officer Frank Leyva.

That means no matter where dirt bikers go the police can remain in hot pursuit.

"I have specialized tires here with, novae tires, which will give me traction for off road use in gravel, dirt or mud," he said.

The Cleveland Police Department has three BMW 650s,and more specialized bikes are on the way. Officers have received at least 80 hours of training in California, plus additional training here on the streets of Cleveland.

"They've been causing problems as far as riding in large groups, blowing stop signs and stop lights," said Leyva.

That's what happened at the intersection of East 65th Street and Quimby Ave.

Phyllis Ivory saw a dirt bike rider run a stop sign  and smash into a car that had the right of way.

His body was thrown at 20 feet in the air.

"In August of last year a young man was riding a dirt bike. He was riding down the wrong way on a one-way street, unaware to catch up with others and in the process he hit a car and lost his life. That is something I never want to see again," said Ivory.

Leyva has a body cam that can be mounted on his shoulder or helmet. .

"So, everywhere that I look the camera will look so I can the suspect that riding the illegal bike on video for evidence for when we go to court," he said.

James Muhic, the Traffic commissioner from CPD says this gives the department a better chance to stop the rude riders from putting themselves and others at risk.

"If we're able to identify offenders even though we're not able to apprehend them we're going back and issuing warrants summons for them," said Muhic.

According to Leyva, if bikers stop and do not attempt to elude authorities, they'll likely just receive misdemeanor charges.

If they try and escape police, it's automatically bumped up to a felony.

ATV and dirtbike riding is dangerous in a city environment, add in the riders doing this for thrill seeking and in large groups most likely disobeying traffic rules/signage, even taking their riding onto the interstates without proper safety equipment such as helmets.

In Cleveland is is now becoming common to see large groups of riders zipping and speeding into and around traffic.

Cleveland Police have a no chase policy and the illegal riders know this well, Even with the new bikes, CPD will not pursue but they do hope that helmet camera footage can help identify riders for later warrants should the riders scatter, As riders are on motor vehicles, they are obligated to stop for these officers which would then be issued a misdemeanor offense, but if the riders flee, then a felony warrant will be issued for those who can be identified later.

I think this will be good for the CPD as they are now getting on a level playing field. CPD now has 3 of these BMW bikes that can be used both on and off road.

So, they get bikes to counter these riders, but still can't chase?  Logic!  The whole idea is stupid, honestly.  It won't be long before an officer on a bike gets into some type of accident.  Stick to cars, call in a bird and wait until the idiots stop, but putting officers on dirt bikes?  That seems like an even worse safety hazard.  Even with proper training for driving one, I assume the officers are still wearing their full gear, which means that extra weight could be used against them.

I need donations to help fund my food addiction. DM for details 😂

Last thing the police want to do is chase someone into traffic and end up having the fleeing rider smash into a car crossing an intersection.

This way, the police can silently cruise in from behind, use their helmet cam and look at the faces of some of the riders before the riders even catch on to whats going on, a helicopter wont do much especially if the riders scatter in different directions.

Silently and dirt bikes don't really go well together. Quite the contrary usually.

I must be definitely missing something. So the cops are given dirt bikes... To drive in a city? Because if they don't pursue, how would they end up off-road? They want to stop the riders but still can't pursue? And because of that they are given helmetcams and are supposed to turn their heads around to capture as much as possible?

More like burn up into the furball of idiots and look around hoping to be able to get hits on facial or plates to cut tickets/warrants later. The second the furball scatters they would have to break off.

Honestly, there is not much that the cops can do, except chase until the suspect crashes or the suspect is gone. This is just a gimmick really to make it look like the cops are answering a question for a problem.  Will some of these people get caught? Yea. But will most of them get away? Yea.  The only way to stop these guys, if you really want to, is to take after my state hiway patrol and local law enforcement. Just chase them until they get away, crash, crash and die, or ram them.  At best this tactic will be a determent for these guys after they find out that the cops are good at riding.

Be kind, Rewind.....

  • 1 month later...

they should just have a law if a bike dont stop just hit them off! and call it a day if they get hurt its okay cause they wanted to be a criminal and now got whats coming! criminals these days gets rewarded now! thats the problem! they get rewarded! people worry about criminal being hurt! but no one ask hey do criminals care about people on the street or drivers do they care they may hit a child thinking its safe as a bike thinks hes top gun can never crash!

PS: TBH i been playing lspdfr mod and i notice something.. when a bike runs from me i normally call a heli and have them follow him! 80 percent of the time they will crash lol and some will just get away! if theres alot of traffic and not able to follow him!
