GTA V system requirements

Featured Replies

Hope it's not too much of a 'nooby' question bus basically. Been involved in GTA IV for years and haven't gotten into GTAV b/c of my computer not being good enough. So I need to update it but not sure what needs to be done to make sure I'm running GTA V on high settings with graphics enhancers/ENB's and plenty of modifications.

So my current system is:

  • 64 bit
  • 8GB RAM
  • Intel Core i5-2380P CPU@ 3.10GHz
  • 3.4GHz
  • AMD Radeon HD 6570
  • ACPI Fan

So what needs updating/replacing and how much work needs done?

Thanks, much appreciated!

Tom..

Looking on the back of the box (cause I have the CD copy) I believe you should be able to run it because your above the Minimum specs, but you don't have anything close (apart from a 64bit OS) to the recommend specs.

You should still be able to run it but on med-high settings but you won't get any higher then maybe 40FPS, if you have a 1920X1080 screen. I have simmer specs (I7 instead of a I5 and a GT730 instead of a AMD) and I run GTA V at 25-35 FPS on med-high settings

@0taku Yeah i can run it but nothing special. I play it on a 32inch TV and would like to get it up to 60FPS!

Thanks

Tom!

Not a chance unless you run low details, sorry. Video card's pretty out of date.

Video card needs to be replaced, the power supply might need to be switched out also depending on what wattage it is to compensate for the new card. You also have to measure the inside of your case to ensure a new card will fit. Your current card doesn't even fit the minimum requirements, as it has half the ram that's required.

Any recommendations of where to go with what to purchase ?

No that is the clock speed of the CPU, generally to check your PSU (power supply unit) you have to enter the BIOS (F11) on Start up, at lest for me this is how to do it.

The Minimum for a GTX 750 (which is a good entry level card) is 300W, I would suggest going to about 500W or above becuase that way you should have plenty of power for the CPU, Fan's, motherboard, GPU (graphics card) I would suggest this any of the Corsair M (modelers) ones because you only have the cabels you need plug in.

An easier method is to just open the case and look at the sticker on the side of the power supply. That being said, a 300W power supply doesn't consistently put out 300W of power, that's just the maximum it can produce. That's one of the key reasons you get a higher wattage than the minimum. I'd also argue the GTX 750 is a pretty terrible card, but it will work if you don't care about detail level.

If you want a decent 1080p 60fps experience then you will need to upgrade your power supply to at least a tier 2 or tier 3. (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html)

In addition to the power supply I would recommend at LEAST a graphics card with the power being equal or greater than a GTX 660 ti or R9 270. That being said if you are going to go for a higher end card and want to exclusively play GTAV, I would suggest an nVidia card. I currently have the R9 390 and it doesn't perform as well as the 970 as GTAV is run on the DX11 API.

Your CPU/Motherboard must also be replaced. I have an i7 3770 and it still bottlenecks my R9 390 in CPU intensive situations. I would suggest at least an i7 2600/k or better. An i7 6700/k is the most preferable option. Please note that there are different sockets and different motherboards will need to be purchased.

Out of curiosity, may I ask why you think the CPU is bottle-necking you and why you think the other two models you suggested would be better? An i7 2600 runs off of an older architecture than the 3770 (Sandy Bridge vs. Ivy Bridge), and the 6700 has identical clock speed and number of cores unless you spring for the 500mhz increased clock speed model, just a couple of different software features and support for DDR4 memory, and perhaps more cache than some models (not the 3770, however) as far as I can tell. All Intel i7 processors have been more of the same for several generations in a row now, save for the occasional half a thousand dollar six core CPUs that don't yield any real performance difference to merit the extra money spent. The extra 500mhz is nice, but nothing an overclock of a 3770 wouldn't fix, if you consider it a problem with today's game demands at all, especially considering TurboBoost brings the 3770 up to 3.9GHZ anyway in certain scenarios.

Both 970 and 390 are capable of nearly maxing out GTAV at 1080p. I've tested LSPDFR in two of my friend's computers.

With my PC (R9 390 - i7 3770 @ 3.9Ghz), frames drop to around 20-30 when 2 or more police vehicles are in a chase regardless of the settings. Both GPU and CPU don't achieve their full usage full stop, they both hover around 60% usage. This indicates that the i7 3770 is not fast enough to keep up in highly populated situations.

With one of my friend's computers (GTX 970 - i7 2600k @ 4.2Ghz), frames still drop but never go below 30 frames in the CPU intensive situations. Both the GPU and CPU don't achieve their full usage again, GPU around 60% and the CPU around 75%.

If that's not the case then it must be a plugin, LSPDFR or RPH.

Two police cars definitely shouldn't overload the CPU, I'm on the testing team for this mod, so it's safe to say I've seen my fair share of police cars on the roads in San Andreas. Those two video cards should theoretically be able to max out GTA V at 4K resolution with a 3770K chip, not just 1080p resolution. I'm running very high settings with only a GTX 670, 6GB of RAM and a 3770K processor at stock clock speeds with TurboBoost enabled.

You can't really draw a comparison based on three things:

1.) You're using two different CPUs (presumably with different motherboard and RAM setups).
2.) You're using two different graphics cards.
3.) One of you has no scripts or no mods at all (based on what you wrote).

That's not a controlled test environment, so to speak.

What's your cpu and gpu temps looking like?

The only stuttering (not lag) I see plausible would result from script commands dealing with multiple AI cop cars and AI cop pedestrians when using up a lot of RAM. I've been running on 6GB and I can get a periodic stutter here and there if I have a giant fleet of patrol cars chasing somebody. I know it's the memory based on the active usage statistics from the task manager. One of the only mjaor problems I have with Windows as an OS is that the recent versions of it (Vista, 7, 8, 10) have used more RAM for itself depending on how much you have. If you have 6GB, it generally uses 2GB, even though it could actually get by on 1GB since the real hard working software elements needed to run a video game are Direct X and the game engine itself. If you have double that amount of memory, Windows could theoretically take up double for itself, etc. That's a dicey proposition if they continue to scale Windows 11, 12 or whatever other versions they have planned ahead in this manner. OS's should be running lean. If Google can do it, a newcomer to the OS game, Microsoft should be able to. I especially shudder to think of what lies ahead since Microsoft developers said to a reporter around the time when Windows 7 was released that they had already been working on a 128bit OS. That's going to be extremely bulky if they aren't careful.

Anyway long story short, have a look at memory usage. Both RAM and VRAM, but system RAM would be my focus if you get stuttering (not consistently low FPS).

That might be it, we both have cheapish motherboards and another problem is the RAM max frequency is 1333, we both have 8gb of RAM.

I didn't check the last time but he said his floats at 6gb. Mine is the same, sometimes hits 6.5gb.

VRAM is no problem for me because I do have 8gb of it. Though when he turned up MSAA to 8x there was major stutter, mainly because he hit the 3.5gb VRAM on his 970.

So faster/more RAM can help?

get a 960gtx card i have one and i get from 58to 62 FPS its a inexpensive card and is good if your monitor or tv runs at 60hz no need for a bigger one

my setup

GeForce 960GTX

8.0 GB RAM

resolution 1920x1080 60Hz

windows 10 pro

i7

runs good and looks good

No, don't do that.

It's about the same as a higher tier card from three generations back, waste of money. 970 or higher is worth it, anything lower than that is a waste. When you cut corners you're only cheating yourself.

I got what works for me, as long as it can run 1080p 60fps almost maxed then I couldn't really care. Of course, you miss MFAA on lower generations (if you actually care), also, I don't want 2GBs of VRAM. (and before you say 'GTX 960 cant use 4GB VRAM' it uses over 3.5/6 GB in GTA V).
