Poor Internet Performance

Featured Replies

(this is copied from my status update)
I'm trying to figure out internet, and need some serious help...
My router is a TG585 v7 unit from Plusnet.
My house is connected on G.992.5 annex A (ADSL2+?)
My line attenuation is 37.0 db, which means I should be getting around 14-15 megabits per second, right? but I'm still stuck at the 6-8mbps of my old ADSL1 package?
Is my router just too damn old? (probably) or is it possibly a issue with my line?
I live around 0.8mi of cable from the exchange and my cabinet does support fibre and has a fibre connection to it, but I don't think that makes a difference.
Is there any logical reason for it being so f*cking slow?
I'd really like to get this sorted before I leave for Swansea, but I'd much prefer having it solved at any point. I'm ready to provide as much info as needed until the date I leave (see member title)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA plusnet. :')
Sorry. I'll stop laughing at your budget internet. I promise *giggles*.

Have you checked your speeds via ethernet or via wireless? If via wireless that's probably your reason, interference and the fact radio waves dissipate with distance, amongst other things.

If that's via cable then I have no clue why you're below what you expect, maybe a new router is required but generally it shouldn't be unless it's a big enough change or the company is just trying to get you to replace your hub for the sake of it. Check what your internet package is from your ISP and see if it compares with that, if not then complain and maybe they'll fix it or tell you how to.

If I could change, I would. But I ain't paying them just to cancel my contract so I can move to BT.

Well I mean BT is good in place but they seem to have issues, but I guess that goes for all ISP's.

I would just heavily avoid the "we're a good internet provider for less money and no silly contracts" like plusnet cause they're absolutely shit. We were on plusnet a while back and it got 1 - 4Mbps at best, down from the quoted 10Mbps.

I'm on VM at 150Mbps.

Im paying for 18 fucking megabits. Yet I get dropouts every other hour, crap performance half the time. and we're stuck with it for another 8 (or so) months unless we pay the dropout cost.

"Unless we pay the dropout cost"

Lol you've not got the hang of complaining then.

Phone them, ask for management or supervisor not the phone operative. When they ask why tell them you're sick of the terrible service, you don't even get what you pay for and you're done with it. Complain enough and they will either improve your service for free or let you leave for free. Been there done that, got the t-shirt.

No, I don't have the hang of complaining and I also wouldn't mind a new t-shirt (as long as it doesn't have plusnet on it)

and also I'm 12 so I can't really phone plusnet support myself without them being like 'prank call, fuck off' probably (haven't tried it) but I know that my dad is very good at arguing so I might find a way to get hin to phone them.

also, what ISP/package/whatever is VM?

I don't think this looks like 18mb download and 1.5mb upload.

VM is Virgin Media. About the only widely available consumer ISP that can be called "superfast".

Paid for 100Mbit/s.

And based on SpeedTest.net's results and Ofcom's, they still are the best for speed by far. But you will still need to complain any time it is very slow or down.

Since you mention the age of the router, assuming it's not a POS modem/router provided by the ISP, have you tried connecting a device directly to the modem? Or if it is an ISP provided POS then switching it to "modem mode".

You are using the WRONG right theme!

Oh my bad, I must have missed that memo.

150Mb/s down and around 8Mb/s up. Ping varies between 8 and 15ms.

But at OP yes get a family member, i.e the account holder, to complain about your service if it doesn't hit what you expect when plugged directly into the router.

I doubt its the exchange, I have friends on over 40mb connections (BT) and get that speed all the time.

It is one of the POS combo units and it arrived Dec 09.

I am a field technician for a Canadian internet provider but I am not that good regarding modem logs to solve a problems. But most of the time it is related to bad wiring, modem/router placement or the router itself. In your case it seems to be your modem/router.

Your modem shows a lot of errors on the local side. The modem you have is also a pretty cheap one but most of the companies use this kind of crap.  I don't know a lot about coax internet as we work on copper wires or fiber optic I could not diagnose if there is a line problem. But if there would be a concern on the provider side it would affect you during rain, at rush times (5pm) etc...

I always suggest wiring desktop computer as they use more bandwidth. If leaving a wire on the floor isn't an option you can still buy "Home Plugs" which will give you reliable connection using your electric wiring. It won't give you 50mbs in all cases but it gets the job done.

You can find theses on amazon for pretty cheap here    ----- This one is a fair choice

Hope it helps!

Connection tops out at only 8megabits at any time. I also have all my desktops connected directly to my router which then has access to the master socket which has a ADSL Faceplate (which didn't seem to do anything) which is then connected to the BT master socket, same performance even on WiFi through 3/4 solid walls and an entire floor of house.
Does the ADSL faceplate slow things down? since it has to get filtered through the faceplate before coming through?

Ok so from that jack how is it connected to your modem? Do you have 50ft extension on it? do you use cheap wire or is it a good one (Some wires have one solid conductor and many others have bunch of smaller wires)
