Police Bus?

Featured Replies

Does anyone know why the NYPD need buses? I really cant see a point? It doesn't seem to be used as a prison bus as it doesn't have a cage or barred windows. I suppose you could use it to transport a ESU weapons squad or lots of cops, but the response wouldn't be as swift as multiple SWAT trucks with lights and sirens.

I suppose you could use it in events of a riot, but then you run into an issue of getting stuck in traffic thats backed up because of closed roads and diversions

  • I'm struggling to understand why you'd need to ask what a bus is used for.... What do you think it's going to be used for?! To transport large amounts of people!!!

Most likely used to transport a large amount of officers to a scene at once, but I'm sure they have multiple uses.

Thats cool, didn't realised it had lights. I presume in the first clip the bus would have been used to send in 20 cops as extra security. I dont think it would be used as mobile command because they c

I would believe they are used in order to transport or store a large amount of witnesses or victims in a high scale incident. I have seen it in the City of Calgary where city transit buses arrive at large residential or apartment fires where multiple families/residents are evacuated in order to keep them warm and safe until they can be moved elsewhere by family or friends.

ah that makes total sense, especially in a densely populated city, thanks for that

It's been a while since I did some checking on NYPD Vics but if I'm right they use it as a Large Mobile Command Post and I believe they have a variation for Prisoner Transport as well but don't quote me on that directly.

Edit: Seems from other sources that they use the buses to transport special dignitaries:

They more than likely have a dedicated variation of the Bus for it's designed use.

its also used to transport cops. you only really see them when something special is happening, a parade or a protest.

most common though is mobile command center i actually have one in my neighborhood that's set up there

its also not used to transport esu, they use this

NYPD ESU Truck 1

maybe it's used to transport off-duty cops to home, from the station on route. Or just transport a lot of cops in one time for street closure or to the stadium

just comparing with what we got here in Russia

Oh, i see, we have kinda a simular thing, we use Public Order Vans that transport 10 to 15 regular Police officers for crowd control

I doubt it carries as much as fully fledged bus, probably why you get long lines of them turn up but it serves the same role

nah we got the subway for that. ;)

While I do not know anything about these buses, I would assume they are used to transport lots of officers to an event requiring lots of security while parking for police cars is very limited.

I recall a scene in the first Police Academy movie where they transported all the cadets to the city in buses, I would assume NYPD can do this and not just for cadets but lots of lower ranking officers or where they dont have enough squad cars in the fleet for the them.

Perhaps they also transport fully armored officers from a staging point to the front lines in those buses.

They are also known for transporting Cadets I believe.

Could be another use for it. It has quite a lot of uses it seems. They could use it for a roadblock too if they wanted, though i doubt they would do that

I doubt that. It would be very ineffective. Lets say he does passes through the blockade, the bus would just hold up other units.

they rarely use roadblocks. even then not for a pursuit. those are very rare btw. (kinda impossible lmoa)

these barriers are mostly used, but mainly for parades or other such events

Those blocks seem like they are placed down to absorb the damage before the suspect slams into the cop car behind it?

If you managed to get around a bus blocking the road you deserve to get away :P
