EPA Trying To Get Rid Of Car Mods!

Recommended Posts

So I'll put this in a nutshell. The EPA is proposing a law that if you read the fine print pretty much says: "It will be illegal to make the smallest change/mod on your car." I don't think the EPA realize what they're doing. They'll destroy hundreds of companies and thousands of jobs. They'll even destroy car culture its self. If it passes it'll be a huge hit on the economy too. I've loved cars ever since I was like 2. This pretty much makes me anti-EPA. If you can't change or modify your car what's the point? You may as well make a law that says every person in the US has to drive a Chevy Volt. They don't realize this'll kill millions of peoples passion. What are your thoughts? I know I'm out for blood.

This will never clear. That is ridiculous. If they want to drive dreary rubbish to work then they can buy their Toyota Camry's and carry on with their boring lives. I wont. My car is already illegal so this will change nothing for me.

It's ridiculous to propose. It don't think it'll pass, but there's a chance. Odds are not though. I just wonder how they can be so blind.

Why does the EPA care about car modifications beyond those that will affect its emissions? I.E. changing rims or paint color, adding a spoiler, etc.

Personally I think that those types of modifications can get kind of ridiculous - 26" shiny rims on a lifted whatever with silver trim and tinted windows. But I don't think that making your car this way should be illegal right off the bat, unless it causes safety issues (such as the window tint being too dark or the suspension being too high).

Well, It would be fun to see every American be issued a mandatory Pruis in a not-that-distant future to fully safeguard the environment.

And if this happens we will see riots in all towns and cities lol. 'Murica!

I know right? Again the blind EPA.

I can't say I like 90% of car modifications I see nowadays, but I am definitely against this proposal. The most I can see them being able to do is to add information of such modifications to your vehicles registration and information. Thus making the state aware of any modifications your car possesses. Even that's a long shot.

Some of us would rather die. Or walk. Beside the Prius is not as green as they make it out to be. The nickle mining biz is pretty taxing on the environment.

This is just a bunch of miserable ppl in a office somewhere who hate themselves. No one will sleep with them cause they have such ugly beards. So they decided that no one else can have fun either.

Come on people, do a least a little itty bit of research for yourself when you hear a claim like this, and don't jump to conclusions. The EPA is not banning "all car mods", and they're certainly not banning you from putting dumb-looking bling on your crappy 90's honda. Even the car industry lobbying site which first reported this clearly stated in their article that the new regulations would apply only to modifications which convert street-legal cars to racecars and which affect the emissions control system (e.g. the catalytic converter, OBD II computer, etc.). In fact, even that claim (which again, was never to ban all mods!) is mostly false according to snopes. No new ban would be implemented at all; the EPA is simply clarifying the language which defines the distinction between a "motor vehicle" and a "non-road vehicle", for existing laws which already prohibit these types of modifications.

I get the hole chopping catalytic converters off. But OBD Computers? Really? So they are saying that i cant reprogram my cars computer to run at its best? BS legislation like that is why Flex fuels never became big because company's deliberately programmed their vehicles run worse on it. What I do with my lab top and my vehicle is none of their business as far as im concerned. So long as its does not jeopardizing mine or other motorist well being.

Considering that the OBD computer controls how the engine works, and therefore directly affects the emissions of the vehicle, then yes it is pertinent to the EPA. It does jeopardize everybody's well-being... air pollution accounts for over 6% of deaths worldwide. If I ran a factory and there was a computer control system running the pollution control systems, I couldn't just say "welp I'll just reprogram it to make my factory run cheaper and emit more pollution... my computer, my factory, right?"

You make a compeling point, but I'm gonna stick with SEMA's research until I know more. And I still don't think all these car mods should be outlawed. Worried about pollution? Just get some fickin wind mills for god's sake people. Don't ruin the car world.

Well i am certainly not trying to run my car cheaper. That shit is for the birds. Im trying to run faster and leaner. Whatever the case the EPA can stick it up their own ass. Im still gonna reprogram my Impala so i can be hitting my 10`s on the track. The polar bears will manage im sure, I got a guy for inspection sign offs anyway so whatever they do does not matter anyway.

I wonder. Why? Like, why do you feel the irresistible need to reprogram your Impala (lulz) so you can be hitting your 10s on the track? What do you get from it? If that's your job, then I understand, everybody needs to earn their living. But if it's not, why does it matter so much, to the point you'd purposely pollute more with your car? And why do you think that polar bears would manage, do you think you are the only one thinking that way? Don't you think that this mass of people having the same state of mind is actually greatly impacting the whole thing?

So many questions that will remain unanswered for the decades to come.

He's not trying to pollute more. He's trying to get faster times on the track. I understand where he's coming from and I respect it. But to get faster times you have to pollute more, it just goes hand in hand.

"I'm not trying to pollute more, I'm just trying to get higher production yields from my factory. To get higher yields you have to pollute more, it just goes hand in hand."

And when enough people believe that way and disregard the consequences of their selfish and unnecessary actions, you end up with this:

You are essentially asking me why I enjoy the things that I enjoy. Why does anyone like anything?? Some people enjoy gardening others enjoy drawing or smoking crack cocaine exc.....  I enjoy driving and taking something someone made and customizing it to make it better for me. That is what i do and enjoy. I bet some of the stuff you do in your free time i would think is not interesting or pointless.   Lots of people do lots of things.

And for what its worth I work for a solar instillation company. And am working on getting my bachelors degree in renewable and sustainable energy. So before you assume that i`m some prick that does not care about the environment because I modifying my car think again.
