This might be a litttttle bit off topic, but it seemed like a good place to ask since a bunch of you in here know LAPD and LASD pretty well...

What's the deal with LASD and Whelen? I feel like I'm seeing more and more LASD units with Whelen lightbars (including a Charger with a Liberty). Do they have a new contract? Is that what they're going to keep using going forward? What's the pattern like on the Legacy's?

The LASD Charger actually is a one off test vehicle. Offtopic here:

The lightbar on it doesnt even look to be a Liberty but rather a Whelen Patriot due to how its thinner than a Liberty. The thick black gaskets also give it away to my eyes. There's also a pair Whelen Vertexes on the rear just underneath the 911 sticker and the front headlight turn signal.

For everyone else interested including Desmond, LASD are running a mixed bag on their Explorers. They have a Whelen Legacy lightbar, some LIN6's on the rambar, ION's on the front facing part of the rambar, but Federal Signal MPS's on the rear hatch, and potentially FS Hide-away lights on the front headlights. The tail lights seem to be Whelen Vertexes that flash amber/blue alternating. I do not know what the deal is, but it most likely has to do with how FS products consitently cost more than Whelen's. Another factor is that the FS Arjent bar has been discontinued for a number of years now, so they need to replace their worn down lightbars with new ones. LAPD went with FS, LASD seems not to be the case.

ELS pattern here, may not be possible to replicate just yet until ELSV is developed.

If you're asking about ratio of explorers to vics in LASD, it's pretty slim. I've talked to a couple deputies about it, and I think the explorers are rolling in pretty slowly. Two of the stations I know don't even have any, and I've only seen 1 before. I would assume that the stations more in-the-city (Hollywood type area) are getting them first. Most of the stations have a whole fleet of Vics, and a couple Tahoes and Expeditions.

Basically, there's a lot more vics than explorers. Depends on the station though. I'm sure more will come soon.

Thanks for the answer. Good to know I only need to program in 2 sheriff cruisers, rather than having to make the Caprice, 09 Charger and Taurus work as well for my own non GTA mod project. Sad that none of the other 3 sedans made it in, but its what LASD deem to be in their best interest and for the taxpayer too.

Very interesting stuff! I didn't even notice the Vertexes on that Charger. I'd imagine then, with that being a one off, the Caprice and FPI are probably one-off test cars too, no?

And thanks for the video with the Whelen FPIU! Is it me, or is there no steady red on it anywhere? Are my eyes deceiving me?

Sorry again if this is taking us off topic, but I feel that since the LAPD FPIU is pretty much fully together in terms of light setup(s), it may be worth discussing the LASD side of things!

To stay relevant, I'll only keep with the Explorer conversation. The sedans and all other vehicles, feel free to PM me if you wanna share insights, speculation and factual knowledge.

The steady burn on that Explorer may very well exist. The takedowns are probably the ones that are steady burn, one red, one blue. Digital video cameras unfortunately do not pickup LED or Strobe ELS correctly. Sometimes, something that is steady burn to a human eye actually blinks on camera. This is due to the differencies in the display frequency of the camera vs the flash frequency of the light. I've had some instances where a slower LED flash appears to have TV scanlines radiating within the light flash. There are numerous videos of CHP's standy mode with all lights on steady, but they are shown to be blinking at a very fast (almost dangerously blinding) rate once put in camera. This information hopefully will help people be more cautious when replicating light patterns off YouTube in the future.

I think something great for the CHP explorer would be steady burns as extras, much like BXBUGS's LASD CVPI. I have never once seen one on a traffic stop with its full lights going, but rather steady burns off to one side, or very slowly flashing.

CHP sure loves their steady burns...

Actually they have the entire bar steady burn because it's in park mode like the Vic in one of my vids on Google drive.

To add to steinberg's info, all of the Liberty lightbar'd units have this park mode. I'm not sure how you guys will implement this until ELSV comes out. This is what he's talking about.

after seeing this video i got an idea of how to get the park mode lights to work with default lighting,(ive yet to test this theory)

what ever lights you want on the whole time, copy them and set them as extralight_1/2 that way the lights will work noramlly but when you go park mode just turn on the takedowns and it will cover the other lights that are flashing

Spoiler

here's a video of my theory, im going to do further testing but i dont think itl work. mainly because the mesh for park mode, even when not activated is still visible, although not illuminated. and even further, when takedowns are active, you can still see the flashing effects behind the takedown mesh.

another idea i got was for the park mode lights to be under an extra, so when conducting a traffic stop, you would activate the extra, and deactivate it afterwards.

but like i said i still want to test it out further so it may not be a problem

*skip towards the end to see the traffic stop (around 4:00)

Can't wait for the new fpiu :)!!

By the way if you send me the template for the dodge ram ambulance, I can make a few High Quality LAFD City and LAX skins :)

Check out some skins I've made.

it's not proper templated, because not finished, but it will be nice to have LAX skins, and btw, do you know why they use different front light's then LAFD?

The fire stations at LAX are LAFD.  They should be stations 51, 5, 80, and 95.  The ambulance should have the same light setup, but they might change slightly from year to year since there's about a 4 year range of model years LAFD uses.
