Violence Resumes (again) in Ferguson

Sure, you may be born into a poor family, but that does not mean you can't change it. As a start, people with little education can get a job at a fast food restaurant. Sure, it does not pay much, but it's better than having other people pay for your government cheese. I suppose that when the government is paying for you, you really have no incentive to get up and do anything. I think it'd be smart for the government to cut off welfare to people who have nothing wring with them. If they have two perfectly working arms, legs, and everything else. Welfare should be for people who need it. Not someone who doesn't want to hold down a job because "I don't feel like it".

By saying that you assume there's actually job for -everyone-. Doesn't work that way. You just have to look out of your window to witness that. People could find a job if there was some. I know that very well, I've been in the unemployment endless circle, sending curriculum vitae's to literally every company, restaurant, store of the region. They don't hire. That's just how it is, I'm not inventing it. If there was actually a job for everyone on this planet, or at least in developped countries, our economy wouldn't be so crappy right now.

The word usage of 'disenfranchised' was used wrong, I don't think these people had been deprived of their right to vote.

"especially" the right to vote. The secondary definition for disenfranchised is "deprived of power; marginalized.".

I vouch for this. I'm sick and tired of funding people to try and help them when they aren't even helping themselves. Obviously not everyone that's unemployed is lazy and careless, but it doesn't take much to notice that people like to soak up the benefits here in America. If a 17 year old black male with no educational degree can make $1.50 above the minimum wage, so should anyone else, that doesn't have some sort of disability or a tragic family event, etc.

Well, some people don't even try. Fast food restaurants here in America will practically hire anyone if a spot is available.

Even if a small percentage of them manage to get those jobs, you can't live on minimum wage, no matter what the GOP tells you. Minimum wage is only suitable for a highschool/college student trying to save for a car over summer break. Someone of these people have kids, sometimes because they could afford contraception, birth control, or other basic healthcare needs. They don't have college education, because they can't afford it, and they need to work sometimes multiple jobs in order to live. Poverty is a destructive spiral, and these people are living in it.

There's 100 reasons why these people are in the streets, and laziness isn't one of them.

Umm... you absolutely can live on minimum wage. It's called the ghetto, and it's a complete mess.

I do realize that, but one job is definitely better than no job.

I could understand if you said "there are 100 reasons and laziness isn't the only one" or "the biggest one", but you say like you personally know every and all people who are poor. There are people who do try to find a job but always get turned down and people who do nothing because they don't care. I believe it's the government's job to provide people ways to the future, especially via education. But creating a job for everyone? Seriously? I live in a country where they had been doing it for 80 years, and we don't have too much to boast about.

and decades of abuse and exploitation from law enforcement.

I remember a girl telling me that cops arresting her for possession of controlled substance was "harassment" and corner boys who sell drugs complaining that those cops keep abusing them. I wonder why... There are actual cases of police violence which do deserve widespread public attention and justice. But I don't think that a robber who got killed while resisting arrest is the one.

I assume you've never driven down a low income neighborhood in the Unifed States. Maybe it doesn't work that way over in Europe or in France, but it works that way in a lot of American neighborhoods. A 15 or 16 year old girl with a child can make roughly $300 on welfare alone, and up to $500 on social security. That's $800 a month, plus any other form of income they may be receiving on the side. We'll assume, for the sake of this discussion, they make an extra $100 to $150 doing small side jobs a month. Not only is the girl now making $900 a month, but the father has a responsibility to pay her child support every month as well. This isn't optional, it's required by law and the father will be arrested if he doesn't comply. She can also get food stamps, a substitution for cash at the grocery store basically. When this all adds up, you can absolutely live in some of the poorer neighborhoods in America, such as some of the inner city Baltimore neighborhoods. Some people are willing to do that, and more than 100,000,000 Americans on welfare out of the 300,000,000+ we have? That's not the best ratio in the world. The next time you visit the United States I encourage you to drive down to Ferguson or Baltimore and tell those people that you feel for them. I'm sure they'll welcome you just like home. (Just make sure your doors are locked, I almost got carjacked in Baltimore in the past lol)

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. There are many people who actually need that assistance and it is only the few bad apples that we hear about in the news that are taking advantage of the system. I also like how you think $800 a month is a lot for someone to live on. I am in the military and I take home about $2500 a month after taxes, I am single, and my housing and medical benefits are provided to me at no cost. The only bills I have are cell phone, internet, car loan, and auto insurance. I will admit I do like to go out to eat quite a bit however I'd say after paying for normal stuff like gas and groceries and the other things I buy when I go out I usually have about $500-$600 left over at the end of the month. And again I am single, no dependents. So if someone makes $800 a month and doesn't have their housing paid for (lets assume they have medicaid) that is pretty shitty, I am not sure why anyone would choose to live on $800 a month unless they like living in a cardboard box and eating ramen noodles for the rest of their life and that is if they are single, imagine trying to support a family on $800 a month.

I did state that there are a lot of people that seriously require that assistance and there's nothing wrong with that. But just as there are people that need it, there are people that really don't need it and continue to soak up the system. In some of the nastiest and crime ridden neighborhoods in America you certainly can survive off of $800 a month. As I said, some of the lower income Baltimore neighborhoods have homes that sell for as low as $3,000 compared to the $800,000 we paid for our current home. In sure $800 a month is enough to live under those circumstances. Of course $800 a month was pulled out of my ass. Some people might actually be getting more than that from welfare and benefits.

I just think you are underestimating how stupid and hopeless some people actually are. There are plenty of people that wouldn't mind living in a ghetto crime hole while making below the poverty line, just to sit on their ass and riot all day.

The idea of a "lazy government moocher" was created by extremely rich Republican politicians and political advisers. I'm sure there are lazy people in Ferguson but bringing it up is a distraction, its a way for the rich to blame poverty on the poor. Because if poverty is the fault of the poor, we don't feel obligated to help them. Pretty convenient how that works out...its a classic political trick.

Yes, I am sure it is quite possible to live off of $800 a month but it wouldn't be a comfortable life so I don't understand why anyone would think people would willingly choose that kind of life.

I don't think I am underestimating how stupid people are and believe me, I will call out stupid things when I see them. The welfare moochers is something the conservatives have created to try and convince voters to support cutting benefits to these people. I have not seen anybody come up with numbers too support their claims of massive amounts of people mooching off the government; I think it is a lot like the voter fraud they (the conservatives) also try to scare people with, it happens a lot less frequently than they like to believe.

I can't give you an answer as to why anyone would want to live off of an assumed $800 a month because I sure as hell don't. The only way you'd be able to get some reasons for that would be to drive through those neighborhoods and ask the locals. If you've ever been to Baltimore I recommend driving down some of the rougher areas. A whole lot of nothing goes on, and people just walk around with nothing to do.

I used to live in the DC area so I have seen the rough parts of DC and I have been through Baltimore a few times as well. You are assuming that since they are walking around that they don't have anything to do. Maybe they do have a job and they just have different work hours than 9-5. Maybe they are unable to get a job, but to assume they are choosing to live like that is unfair.

Nope, I didn't read the full report, only the verdict. I know that Brown was a wanted theft suspect who fought an officer, do the DOJ investigation results contradict it?

hard to argue with you since you probably have different experience and data than I do. Maybe in America everyone is eager to work and the rich obstruct them. Up here it's different.

Trust me, I lived in a Baltimore ghetto for some time and most of the people there are of one race and remain in the ghetto all day, which is only residential might I add. Baltimore office buildings are near the harbor. The inner city is all residential with illegally placed liquor stores. When you see the exact same people sitting on their doorstep smoking and drinking liquor every single day, it gets hard to assume that they even have a job. A lot of people in Baltimore have no issue with living in a ghetto that's majority of their race and culture. The ghetto in Baltimore isn't just the ghetto. A lot more goes on in these ghettos such as cultural parades, events, gatherings, cookouts, etc. Things that you'd only see happen in the ghetto and not the rest of Baltimore unless it was some sort of big special event. A lot of people wouldn't mind not working or working for little pay to live in a neighborhood like that. This is probably why Baltimores ghetto's are still jam-packed with people, and they aren't getting any smaller.

Good things come to people that work. Some people seem to think that waiting will suffice.

There were two separate investigations; one for the actual shooting involving Officer Wilson and Michael Brown and one investigation conducted by the DOJ of the entire Ferguson Police Department on allegations of racial profiling among other unethical/illegal things. Riley24 is referring to that second investigation. While the investigation of Officer Wilson's shooting found him to be justified in his actions and did not commit any wrong doing the second investigation found that there was wide spread issues within the Ferguson Police Department as a whole and that there were many racial injustices committed by the department.

So you are saying that the Baltimore ghettos are just one big celebration central? Why is it that everybody else is wanting to live in these neighborhoods if it is just one big party? My neighborhood has lots of cookouts and social gatherings, do I live in a ghetto? You can't fault anyone for having a good time. Do you think that since these people have no job they should be forbidden from having social gatherings?

With all due respect, 13ubba, you are completely missing my point. My point is that some people prefer to live in the ghetto because of the atmosphere and cultural similarities of its residents. An easy example would be a black person wanting to live in a majority black community. All Black communities in Baltimore are ghetto's. That's just how racially divided and segregated Baltimore is as a city. It's either White or Black, with maybe some mixture in the medium income neighborhoods, which aren't prosperous. Based on the arguments that you're providing, I can assume that you've never lived in a ghetto before. This might be why you're missing my point.
