New Computer, is it good?

Recommended Posts

Buying this PC this weekend, would like to get some review on it, here are the basic specs.-

- AMD FX-6100 Six-Core Processor

- 10GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM

- 1.5TB Serial ATA hard drive

- AMD Radeon HD 7450 graphics card

Are these specs good enough for PC gaming?

WAIT! I would like to differ from GTAIVCode3 in saying that if you want to play GTA IV on that computer at reasonable settings, nonetheless GTA V if it comes out, you will be missing the mark. The Radeon HD 7450 is an entry-level graphics card that is meant to be used only for web-based gaming and viewing media, using it as an HTPC. It will not do a very well job running today's games, and is not "future-proof" at all. Unless you plan on upgrading your graphics card in the near future, don't expect to do any serious gaming smoothly with that card. The processor should suffice, but I would not recommend it. The AMD FX series is one that is sorely lacking in performance, and is also, to some extent, not "future-proof", at least not for demanding games in the future akin to Battlefield 3, or GTA IV in the past.

Now that my "rant" is over, what is your budget? We could recommend a computer to buy, or parts to build a computer with that could both save you money, and give you a big performance boost compared to your current build. If you are specifically focused on GTA IV, I would also refer to you the "PC Performance" section of GTAForums.com. This site along with that site helped me finalize my current budget build I have.

- AMD FX-6100 Six-Core Processor

Looking good, but AMD... Dunno.

- 10GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM

Great.

- 1.5TB Serial ATA hard drive

Model? Or at least RPM?

- AMD Radeon HD 7450 graphics card

AFAIK Radeon nomenclature, this card is average model, good for top-end games with low-to-medium graphics options (may be wrong).

10GB? For PC gaming, 8 is enough. Plus I suggest you look up for modules with a higher frequency (PC12800 and higher). AMD's Bulldozers aren't known to really outperform Intel's Sandy Bridge CPUs, though they're usually cheaper, but that's enough for GTA IV. About the graphics card, yeah, it's really weak.

That rig is a lot more balanced, and I would recommend it over your first choice. It should be able to run GTA IV smoothly, but you may have trouble with the graphics cards for games in the future, but its fine for now. May I ask how much you are spending on that PC?

Those are both pre-built ones that Best Buy sells. The first is an HP Elite, the 2nd one is a Dell XPS. They both have horrible graphics cards. I'd go with the HP since it at least gives you a quad core. The i5's you find in stores are only dual cores. But either way upgrade the graphics cards and power supplies.

Higher numbers don't mean that the card is better. A 7450 sounds better because of the high number. Heres an example:

An nVidia GeForce 9600GT is the same performance as an nVidia GeForce 8800GT, but it runs with slightly lower power consumption.

Why wouldn't you build it yourself? Or at least get someone to do it for you if you don't know how. It would be cheaper, and you'd have the ability to choose every single component of your rig, to make it really unique. In my opinion, that'd be your best option because this system is still not balanced as you have one of the best CPUs available on the market, BUT a low/middle-end graphics card. For decent gaming (especially with games like GTA IV), I'd recommend at least a GTX 560Ti.

I highly suggest building it your self.

This is a great site: http://www.build-gaming-computers.com/gaming-desktop-computer.html

With a few small tweaks these computers are amazing.

I've stated in previous posts that there's good reasoning behind building your own pc, first of all, it's not that hard, you'll get much more PC power for your money, and the satisfaction that comes with it isn't bad either.

If you don't know how to build it yourself, ask one of your mates that knows a thing or two about computer to lend a hand, you'd be amazed how far a pizza and a drink will get you:)

Because we don't like buying parts that were already sub-par when they came out, and are now a generation behind (in the case of your 6770).
