Shows foreign to you

Featured Replies

Hey there all,

I was hoping to open a discussion on shows that are foreign to you that you like to watch. The reason for this discussion is I thought it might be interesting to see what other people like and possibly find more shows that I may enjoy myself.  They have to be foreign to you and tell us how did it lure you in.

One of the first foreign ( to me ) shows that I started watching a long time ago is Japanese show called “Downtown” ( gaki no tsukai ). This show is made up from Japanese comedians and the thing I like about it most is the special 24 hour challenge episodes they have. Usually the special has a specific theme such as them being high school students, police officers, nurses etc. The challege is usually they can't laugh for any reason for 24 hours and if they do they get a punishment, usually a very hard slap on the ass. There have been other challenges and punishments but this is the one they have the most.

During these challenges other comedians, actors and singers are invited to do skits to get these guys to laugh. Sometimes the hosts work against one another to get one or more of their partners punished. There are a lot of things you may not understand or think is not funny because of the culture differences but a little research will get you in the know.

Here is an older episode where the punishment is a dart from a blowgun is shot into their butt if they laugh.

Here is a show from Korea that I've also enjoyed very much but has since stopped being made. It's name is “Family Outing” and is a comedy-variety show. This takes place in many places around South Korea with the cast going to an elderly family's place and taking care of chores left by the residents while they go on vacation. Special guests such as singers, actors/actresses and comedians were invited to join them as they did challenges both physical and mental. Alot of editing goes into they episodes to add character theme songs and special effects to make it more funny.

You can't be serious!?

Flashpoint. (It's Canadian, technically)

Flashpoint needs more seasons, dont know why they ended it. :(

Oh man, there's hardly any US shows I watch anymore, UK is so much better for that.

Red Dwarf

The Mighty Boosh

IT Crowd

Monty Python: Flying Circus

Darkplace

In the Loop/The Thick of It

Blackadder

Father Ted

Countless Italian westerns and horrible Chinese kung-fu movies can be added to the list as well.

They ended the Flashpoint series because the crew and cast wanted to end the series on a "good" note. They didn't want to drag the series on and cause it to become redundant and boring. They ended the series on a positive note, where everyone is pleased with how it ended.

Though I completely disagree with this, that's what a few sources said when I Binged it.

The only foreign show I have watched is one called Are You Being Served. I think its British but ma grandma used to watch it and I thought it was pretty funny :P
