FRAPS and you

Featured Replies

So I've been wondering: How good is FRAPS? Does it really drop frames? Is it worth the price? I ask because I need a good recorder, and Action! keeps desyncing my audio and video.

Are there any other programs out there that are better?

I don't know if it's just me, but I start lagging when I record with FRAPS. It makes my fps drop to like 10 - 1, but it might be my crappy computer not really sure.

In my opinion, FRAPS records in the best frames and quality, but it "frame rapes" my games. I usually get 60 frames not recording, but when I kick it on, I'm lucky that I get 25-30. Makes it really hard to play with stuttering. But, if you've got a good PC, it shouldn't be an issue. I used to use it all the time in my videos, especially my multiplayer ones.

Try using OBS or Nvidia Shadowplay (if you have a GTX 660 or higher).

I'm not a fan of OBS, even though it is free. It takes too long to get a good setup with it (my videos still aren't at a decent quality after ditching FRAPS for awhile). I just downloaded shadowplay last week, but I've been too busy to record. I'm gonna give that a try next.

FRAPs has been around for a long while, I haven't used it in years, but I'm sure they're the go to for best game capture software.

As for how many frames you'll lose using fraps, it really depends on your machine. On my laptop i used it on i think i lost atleast 12 frames.

Having said that if you have a recent Nvidia card with shadow play, it's friggin beast. It's much more effecient than FRAPs for me... having said that I got several dedicated capture cards, nothing beats having a dedicated device.
