NYPD BADGE

Featured Replies

where in the law books does it say simply wearing a badge counts as impersonation?

Let me just repost what I had on the first page. Pay particular attention to the bolded text.

Below is a quoted section from New York State Penal Law 190.26.

Based upon the law, you could have very well been arrested.  You're lucky that all that officer did was confiscate your item.

If you cannot grasp this then you're either trolling or you should genuinely work on your reading comprehension ability.  There is literally no reason, other than impersonation, that you would be walking around with a fake shield on.  Your attempt to play cop and feel like a badass violated the law quite clearly.

Yeah I get it OK sheesh

while understand all of your opinion, even the insults I of course know I will be given, Its not fair for people to sell things expecting customer to buy it and then forced to be arrested for purchasing it. Impersonating a police officer is not wearing a police hat or badge, but rather enforcing law without proper certification. that's like you having the right to concealed carry or open carry a pistol in a holster and then charge you impersonating a cop for having a glaco police holster.  You can't unless you carried it to the point acting like one. I was simply buying a drink and then walked out the store and boom their was the unmarked crown vic.

Wrong, you were wearing a badge that would identify you as a Police Officer, otherwise, he wouldn't have stopped you, they don't expect you to buy anything, even under glow for cars has a warning on the label that reads "Check all Province or Statewide laws before using this product" I have a crown vic, that has strobes in it, cops know I have the car & the strobes & they are legal here, but wearing a badge that would identify you as an LEO is illegal no matter where you go.

If you really like the job and wanna get the feel how's to be like one of the finest learn the street, develop some situational awareness, analyze people you meet walking down the street etc. Street smartness will help you in everyday life and is a legit attribute unlike a collectible badge you'll hate when something bad happens because of it.

I'm sorry we have to point it out, but it makes a HUGE difference in situations like these

Ok so you can't be a police officer because of your criminal record and so you decide to wear a police badge out and about that you say is a "collectible." The situation in itself doesn't make you look like a collector, it makes you look like a whacker/wannabe. I'd stop you too if I saw that. As others have pointed out, it is clearly defined as illegal in New York to wear a badge in which law enforcement is distinguished.

You might as well be saying, "Dude that cop had no right to confiscate my weed because I paid money for it." People pay money for things all the time, but it doesn't make them legal to wear/use (drugs, guns, badges). While you're at it, you should throw some red and blue lights on your car and then tell the officers they can't arrest you because you collect lights and you paid money for them.

To be clear, the penal code says it's not illegal to have; it's illegal to wear. It's also not illegal to have illegal car modifications, but it's illegal to put them on your car and drive around with them in public.

Bottom line is get real, dude. If you want all that crap, then fine. Keep it at home. You say you really want to turn your life around and become a police officer by showing that you're an upstanding citizen. Tacking on a charge of Impersonation to your record will not sit well with any police agency anywhere.

:) Yes sir. Idk maybe a firefighter doesn't sound like a bad idea. huh?

This is the most ridiculous thing I've heard. You are the type of person I could easily see driving around a retired Crown Victoria and getting giddy when people slow down and think you're a police officer. First, you're wondering if you can be a cop with a felony, and now this? Something tells me that you are not the most well adjusted person in the world. I'm getting very strong wannabe/whacker vibes from you...and it's unsettling.

Regardless of whether it is actually legal or not (I have no idea, since I'm not a lawyer and I don't pretend to be one), wearing anything that could make others identify you as a police officer is probably one of the stupidest things a person can do. Do you know how many people, especially in New York City, hate cops? Do you know how many people specifically target cops? As you probably know, two NYPD officers were shot in their patrol car a couple weeks ago just for being cops. You don't have the training, nor the skill set, to handle someone who is attacking or shooting you unprovoked. Even police officers themselves are not stupid enough to broadcast to the world that they are cops when they are off-duty...and they have the training...you don't.

You might not even realize it, but this officer saved your ass. Be thankful for him.

They are not "forcing" you to be arrested. They clearly state in their terms and conditions.

"We are based in Germany and Germany does not have any legislation or badge law(s) aimed at preventing legitimate collectors and enthusiasts pursuing this hobby.
