Beginning of the end?

Title says it all. After the closing of Megaupload by the FBI, Filesonic has decided to disable it's sharing functionality so basically, they are shutting themselves down. Also, Uploaded.to is no longer accessible for American users to protect itself against US legislation.

Could this be the end of file sharing as we know it?

Opninions and ideas are more than welcome. Will this mean a World War III on the internet, will hacker groups like Anonymous be able to do something about this? Please share your thoughts since that's wat internet should all be about.

Yes to the first one, it will be a problem.

But, don't those sites also carry a lot of non-infringing content too?

And what about stuff like Linux that use such sites/torrents to distribute updates?

IMO it'll come a point where the US will try to make downloading ANYTHING a crime. Have fun with that US government.

Doesen't Mean its permanent, Stuff like this happens, Take rockstar for example: 13 Year old boy wants GTA IV on his PC, Pirates it, Rockstar manages to find out, Usually don't Give a Rats ***, BUT!, This time its special, They want to scare everyone, So they take down one simple Violation, And sue the family to death, Everybody get frightend, Nobody pirates for like a week, Rockstar Wins, The boy looses, In this case, megaupload lost, What uploaded.to did was smart.

Higly Doubt it, While its still a bit scary for some of the companys, The revunues will always be there, ALWAYS, Its such simple money for them, And with that money, They can put security emplacments in to prevent such content being shared, Still, It is a thought that they could disapear, But the demand will always be there, (Don't forget about the scare that cloud would kill File Sharing sites)

Not really, While everbodys "Semi" Pissed, Its for one good reason, SOPA and simaller bills, People are tired of it already, And this is just gasoline on the fire, As far as hacktivists, No, I highly doubt they can, Why? Some times they make extremley poor decisions, Like hacking innocent people, Then Legoslation is like "Ya see!" Ive only seen a few out comes where hackivits really have won the good fight, This though, I feel is just adding more tension to the situation.

@Celticfang: Indeed. It seems like the US government think they own the internet and can do with it as they please. Internet is a global phenomenon and should be treated as such.

@JAM: Thanks for the opinion, you make some valid points there. However, even if people like Anonymous don't do much good, we should do at least something about it to show governments we are watching them and we will not be pushed aside.

It will not be the end of file sharing as we know it, it will only mean that US users will have to revert to using torrents.

It's the only viable way of going about the issue that is the US government, if you block out US users, and make them aware of why they're being blocked,

they (the users) can then in turn contact their elected officials and politely (I do mean that, chances are you'll be dealing with some intern that quite frankly does not want to be there),

and inform them that you oppose SOPA/PIPA (and that Protect Children from Child Pornographers act that SOPA or PIPA will be attached to), and they will lose your vote if they support the bills.

Europeans needs to be made aware of ACTA, Anti Counter-fitting Trade Agreement, the EU managed to keep all preliminary talks thus far under covers, but it is almost as bad as the US attempts.

ACTA doesn't "just" affect Europeans, so far the signatories consist of United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Korea

And the negotiating parties: Australia, Canada, the EU, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, The Republic of Korea Singapore, Switzerland and the United States of America.

But how long until they close down torrent sites as well? It's not that hard to imagine really. Once you pass an internet censorship bill, you can just about close down any site. As you said, the EU could very well vote for a anti child pornography bill, giving governments the power to close down any site that relates to child pornography. Governments could very well take that as an excuse to close down any site they want.

Just take a look at what happened to Assange. The US is searching for some BS reason to still be able to get him extradited, regardless of EU extradition legislation.

The thing is, there are tons of bills on EU and US level that make no sense at all, just like SOPA and PIPA. Just take a look at this site: http://www.statewatch.org/ My professor international criminal law recomended us that site to keep a eye on all EU legislation, seeing so many bills are passed that restrain our civil liberties, without us even knowing.

Organisations like the EU and the UN have their advantages but we must be watchful that we don't lose our democracy and independence, like we are doing now.
