scared to live here

Featured Replies

i feel like this is a nice and welcoming community. and i think i should share the thing that happened to me today....

so these gypsies in Finland have generally a very bad reputation along people. everybody says that they steal cars and do other illegal things a lot.

one family has moved some time ago to same apartment block where i live and everyday there are tons of then hanging around and scaring people.

today i went to a bike ride with my friend and some gypsies around same age as us stepped out of a car (one of them, about 15 yrs was driving) and yelled at us ''hey!'' ''stop! i wanna speak with you!'' and they were REALLY aggressive looking. for a moment i thought that they wanted to steal my bike or beat me up so i said ''i don't have time, i gotta go'' and one of them yelled after me stuff like ''go a head, ride away you pussy!'' and i was pretty damn scared, because i know that their parents might even have guns and knives. So a little later i called my mum and told everything. i was really scared to go back.

then after the 11 km little ride we rolled to our street and my friend saw the same kids in the playground threatening little kids. my friend looked back at me and i knew from his face, that we had to go away. so we drove to a nearby little bridge and tried to call my friends. no one answered. then we called my mum who called the police there. when my mum told me over phone that cops came in front of our house and the gypsies ran away (cowards...) we went and put our bikes in the storage and took a elevator upstairs.

I'm afraid they know where i live. that's pretty bad, because its said that ''when you get in trouble with gypsies, they'll never leave you alone''

so....say what you say but i had to share this with someone and i am very scared right now.....

That's really bad. I'm sorry to hear you've had such an experience.

From what you're saying you acted in the correct way- very mature and sensible.

Your best path to take at this point is to let the Police know exactly what happened providing them with descriptions- what they looked like and so on, do this through a non-emergency number or by going to a local police station. Tell them exactly how you feel. There's a chance that they'll provide with you with some protection (over here we have the Witness Protection Act to help people like you).

If you have to go out, let your friends or family know where you're going and for how long and if you're not back by a certain time, to call the police. It may also be a good idea to let your building owner know and they can get in touch with the relevant securities (you said you took an elevator so I assume you live in flats?).

Chances are they'll be no danger at all. They're just bored and want something to do- sounds odd but it will be true.

It's good to share things like this. When this happens you feel like you have been targeted and you'll quite rightly become scared. Though it's very unlikely they will have specifically targeted you- more likely they just wanted to impress each other by annoying you and your friend.

Let us know how it goes.

yeah, i think they did that just because they are bored and want to be badasses or something. If they come at me again, i'll probably leave an ano... [cant spell correctly] tip to the police web site. There is no need for describing them since they wear stuff that no one else would ever wear. Men usually have tan jackets or leather jackets with suit shirts and ties. the women have huge skirts (people say they steal stuff like milk from stores under the skirts) and very colorful and detailed shirts. men usually have Elvis hair or something else very old  fashioned :D

anyways, thanks for your quick response. it is good to be part of a community like lcpdfr.

The witness protection program doesn't apply here. And I don't think that the police can do much unless they actually threatened you or harmed you. But I don't know much about your country and how things work there.

Have you talked to the police about this? I also live in Finland, feel free to PM me about this if you wanna chat up. I can try to give you advice.

if they do something physical or threaten me again, i'll report it right away. I'm still scared because, you probably know, they are pretty dangerous....

Yeah, I get ya. You have the right to be spooked. It's a scary situation.

I see where you're coming from- and you're right, things will of course be different. But in my mind a group of people saying (or indeed shouting) something like ''hey!'' ''stop! i wanna speak with you!'' who have just got out of a vehicle driven by a 15 year old (min age is 18) is indeed aggressive and when followed up by ''go a head, ride away you pussy!'' (which would imply they wanted to hurt him- a threat) could be classed as affray, attempted assault and disorderly behaviour- the second allowing for the WPA to come into effect.

In this case, since OP is actually the victim it would allow for protection to be granted more easily. Keep in mind protection doesn't have to be armed police or body guards stood outside the door, but more things like emergency/panic buttons carried on the person, CCTV, monitored doors etc.

I deduced attempted assault by the way it was described (it may not be the case that it was).

EDIT: Like I say- this is our method of dealing with such situations, it probably won't be the same over there.

The WPA wouldn't be applied here since there is no immediate threat to the person in question. It's for more serious situations for those who are testifying in court or those who have had attempts on their life, not because somebody shouted at them in street. If this was the case, every Tom, Dick and Harry would be in witness protection and as it stands, there seems to be no reason for WPA.

All you need to do is call the police whenever you feel unsettled and they'll move them along.

so....say what you say but i had to share this with someone and i am very scared right now.....

Move to America and you can do this if somebody tries to seriously harm you (first 8 seconds speaks for itself lol):

All joking aside, stay in close contact with the police.

And for those wondering about the video, the dude's name is hickok45, he's a former Sheriff's Deputy.

isn't there a law that allows you to shoot any intruders in your house or apartment? that would be useful in this country too..

Yes and no. It depends on the state and if you know for fact they intend to physically harm you. But often just the sight of a weapon will cause people to flee. As the saying goes: "A bullet sounds the same in every language."
