Searching for a gaming laptop

Featured Replies

Hello,

I've recently started looking around for a new laptop, now that I'm finally earning money, and I need help trying to find a laptop that's better than my current one. I'm looking for a laptop that can run most games on high or medium-high settings, GTA IV included, as well as one that would be able to run GTA V, seeing as it would probably rape my computer!  Anyway, here is what I'm looking for in terms of specs.

  • CPU -  1 dual core or greater (Dual CPUs would be great)
  • RAM - 8GB or greater (I can settle with 4GB as I can take 4GB out of my current one)
  • GPU - any Nvidia gpu that's good for running most games on high and has more than 1GB of video ram/dedicated graphics memory (Multiple GPUs would be awesome)
  • OS - Windows 7 64-bit (Not hatin' on Win 8, I just don't really care for it and I"m not going to explain why right now. I'm just sticking with 7)
  • Price (The most important!) - looking somewhere in the $500 range. I'm willing to go in the $600 range but the max I'm willing to spend is no more than $700.

So, what does everyone recommend I should get? I'm open to all suggestions. I'm also willing to buy a used one if someone has one they'd like to sell. Just post the info and I'll let you know if I'm interested. Thanks for the help in advance.

Hello, I spent around 750 for this desktop i'm on, now i know you said laptop, but that's a lot of crap to smash into that one little machine. I'd suggest getting a desktop, and also, the graphics card is one of the most important things you'll need if your looking to run any game. And you should get a desktop because you can upgrade it anytime. But on the other hand for a laptop, not so much.

Thanks,

Drake has a point I looked before I bought my desktop and alot of Laptops that could handle what I wanted to play were in the 1200 dollar range. So i found a good desktop with a great CPU but medium graphics card thus saving me alot of money and now I can upgrade my card for those intense graphic games

Let the good times roll

If you want a laptop at around the specs your are asking for your aren't going to get it at your price range unfortunately. Also most gaming laptops now come with a quad core and you might as well go with one because the performance will be much better. The only way to get your price range is to go for a desktop where u can tweak every spec to your liking, but seeing you are asking for a gaming laptop I can assume in your situation you need the mobility like I do. I got mine about last year at this time at around 1200 dollars and thats probably going to be the range at which you will spend for a laptop at those specs, maybe a little less because you want a dual core. Also if you want an nvidia with more than 1gb vram the price will be higher especially if you want one with sli. Anyways good luck at what you can find you never know there might be one out there that fits your range and specs  .

You're never getting a laptop in the $500 range for your desired specs.

Mine (info on profile) was over $3000, which should give you a good sense of what the prices are. I went with a laptop because portability is a must for me, I can't lug around a desktop.

You need be ready to spend at least $1200 on a fair computer.

Yeah, you might as well buy a low end desktop and upgrade later when you can. I just spend 1300 on my asus g750. It has a 17.3 inch screen, i7 4700qm, nvidia gtx 860m 2gb, 12gigs of ram, a full keyboard, and its signature cooling system. (amazing btw) But, i bought mine to use for school and to game and it does everything i need it to do.

Honestly if you're getting a computer for gaming, then just get a desktop. Laptops aren't meant to be used for gaming (except those overly priced machines), Laptops for originally designed for study or work related things.

Desktops are more powerful and can be upgraded to your needs. and they work better for gaming than a laptop.

I say this; if you want to play BF3 on Ultra settings, go spend the $1,000+, you can play anything else just fine. But if you spend half as much, you can still play just about any game with high FPS just fine. My desktop was $600, it has AMD FX-8320 octo-core processor @ 3.50 GHz. Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 (not the best, but eh, it handles everything), 8 GB DDR3 RAM (again, not great but gives me no issues), and a 1 TB hard drive. I got that for $600. I didn't build it because I didn't have the time to, but I can play GTA IV with every car modded, an ENB, and all the settings to high, and get 45 fps lows. I can still play BF3 on high and very high.

I understand what you're all saying in that I should get a desktop instead. The issue is space. I'm starting college in a couple months and I don't think I'll have the space for a large desktop. I might have space, but I don't know yet. Plus, I need a something portable as I'm studying computer engineering. I got to thinking and my goal is to find a used cheap gaming laptop that's 10x better than my current one, and after a while, hopefully I would've able to save up enough money to buy a razer blade laptop. My other hope is if I find out I can have a desktop is to try and build one. I can get an old desktop computer and strip it down and upgrade everything. I'd just need to find a place where I can get parts for a good price. Sorry if anything is confusing as it's late and I'm tired.

You can always buy a mATX based gaming computer, it's much more portable. However you still need a monitor keyboard and mouse. Just a suggestion.

Not to reiterate what everyone else said, but if you're going with anything labeled "Gaming" get ready to dish out $800 - $2000. Laptops are always going to be more expensive for less specs. However if that's the route for you, MSI, ASUS, and Lenovo would be good brands I'd look into purchasing equipment from. I do not recommend Alienware, Dell in general, and HP either.
