I got a K9 dog

Featured Replies

So today i my family got an K9 dog that didnt pass his last test to become an offical police dog because he was to playsick

My dad knows some guy apparently and that led to us getting a police dog :D

So what do you guys think? And is there anything special i should train him to? (He's already trained to the basic police dog things)

P.S
(Sorry if the picture is a bit small :/ )

(This is not a picture of him just a picture that looks alot like him)

assuming this is true.. I'd suggest you get him some house training and other typical house pet training. I mean, you can't do any special training because AFAIK you are not a LEO and therefore getting "special training" as you suggest might lead one to believe you're trying to make him a Police K9 and we all know impersonating a LEO is absolutely illegal.

Enjoy your new house dog

Before people get things, usually they just use a picture that is similar. For example, a lot of people have used a showcase picture of the car they're getting before they actually get it in their driveway.

Anyways, good luck with the new dog. Dogs are quite fun to play with!

Cars and dogs are completely different. When posting a picture of your car you just find a decent picture of the same year and model online. But when its a dog then its different because every dog is different and are each there own unique.

If you are telling the truth then read this;

Also if he is a trained police K-9 like you said you need to break him of that. Police dogs aren't anything like you see in movies. They are trained to find drugs and crap they have very little social contact, so you need to break him of his police training. Take him for walks, play with him don't be to rough or you will lose your face. Need to be very careful most police dogs that get retired and stuff end up being put down for attacking their owners and other people.

Also if you use your dog for "Law Enforcement" stuff its no different then putting lights and sirens on your car and pulling people over. You will be arrested, you will be jailed and fined and your dog will be taken away from you. Treat it just like any other dog pretend it never had its police training.

Well forget the police training because you can't use it. Only thing you might be able to use is the chase down and attack command then once again you need to learn dutch for that lol.

You can use the police training in daily life though. I have 3 k-9's walking around in my house with definitely social skills.

My advice would be, get a band with the dog, build it up as it supposed to be, let him get used to the house and the family, don't start doing things after the previous one.

Also police dogs are chosen by multiple reasons and one of those reasons is that they want to work for their owner / boss. So once you got that bonding with him, take him out for a bicycle ride  walks trough the forest, use his searching training to hide things in a forest ( If there are no others around and you already have him for a 6-7 months though ) and let him search that. The dog will appreciate that and it will call back memories.

Even here in the Netherlands they are having German Sheppard's and Mallinois Sheppard's ( not even police dogs but regular house dogs ) being trained with K-9 qualities, like advanced biting techniques ( see picture in spoiler )

This is what they actually do just for fun and if you have the dog in your control they don't do harm.
And to one of the guys that replied with old police dogs being put down and stuff.. they don't do that here, why? Because our k-9's get socialized and are going home day by day to their owners.

Most of all, get the dog to trust you, build a band with him. Your his friend and he is yours, though he isn't in charge, you are. And you have to show that from the start or your being walked over.

If you want anything more to know feel free to PM / if you need those dutch words :P

I'm honestly not sure how any "use" of a dog could possibly be considered "impersonating a police officer". That means you're actually trying to make people think you're a cop; it doesn't mean "you're doing something only a cop is allowed to do". No one, bar no one, sees a dog as a symbol of a cop; that's how it's different from flashing lights on a car. You could impersonate an officer and happen to have your dog with you, but whatever you do would still be impersonation if you didn't have a dog.

That said: You might want to be careful with the dog; police dogs tend to be trained to be aggressive against people they think are threats. I'd probably focus on training him to be less aggressive.

I get what you're saying, and agree! My point was more a mere side joke aimed at the question OP posed of "what type of specialized training should I do" (sic). Impersonation is impersonation, I know. Like I said, it was a subtle humorous joke with a serious message .:puts on serious face:.

I spoke to a State Trooper in Massachusetts, USA over the summer about this issue. Trooper Ramsland of the MSP said that State has a policy in place that states that when a police dog reaches retirement, either the trooper partnered with the dog keeps it as a residential pet, or the State will execute the dog no questions asked.

I believe this policy is simply just policy of the Massachusetts State Police, I don't think it applies to other agencies here in the Commonwealth, but it's interesting to see other departments being very relaxed about this issue. Not to reiterate in this debate, but these dogs (Especially for the State) are trained rigorously and can very easily harm someone, induce paralysis, amputations, or even death with the slightest hand gestures and voice commands.

My recommendation would be to carefully do your research, and make sure what you do is in accordance with local & state laws.

Here is a picture of Trooper Ramsland of the MSP demonstrating hand gestures and why they use German to speak to the dogs. ( He kept saying nein, nein, other german phrases )
