iv been a marine for almost  8 years. I get out in September of 2014 and will start pursuing my dream of becoming a police officer. any tips from anyone on the process?

I've wanted to be an officer since my original dream of being a game developer died out due to the nearest colleges to me that teach it, which are still pretty damn far, a few hours per drive, had like 2% acceptance rates and given my grades in school they weren't the best so yeah i could tell at that point that, that dream was never going to occur. This was around 10th Grade. I am now a Senior, almost going on the 2nd half of the school year (a few months) and i decided back when i was a Sophomore that i would follow on my backup dream which was to become an officer of the law and currently still is. Due to a lot of my current relatives already being LEO's in different LEO fields, and also due to most my friends going off to become LEO's as well, i decided, "why not?", you know? So yeah. So that is what i am going to be going off into college for to hopefully one day be able to join a LEO field of some type. My current dream is becoming just a normal officer of my local town, why? Because they get these babies to drive, my dream car:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXSqtGE5wHo

My local town's PD ONLY has Chargers, from Sixth Generation (2006 - 2010) to Seventh Generation (2011 +) ones! Both slicktop and not! And also one police suv (not slicktop) primarily used for road blocks, should that ever be necessary and it works because streets here aren't that wide. But also because i like to help people out people and i want to help stop the crime in my local town. I wanna be a hero, you know? And that is what i find any LEO to be, a hero, no matter what field, for the valiant services they provide to the people. Maybe one day i'll get to fulfill that dream, but hopefully one soon...

P.S. Would anyone mind making this into a custom vehicle for me to use? ELS as well, please? There are absolutely no vehicles out there about my town's PD and it's be greatly appreciate if anyone would be so kind as to do so, no one has too, but it'd just be a very kind thing to do and if anyone wanted to do it and send me the link to their finished work, that'd be appreciated. Thanks to anyone, if anyone, who decides they wish to create said thing! All right, that's it for this P.S.

If you haven't already gone to college get your degree, if you have follow these tips:

When looking for a department ask about there policy's, if they have a entire room full of binders run away from that department, and same way around if they have just a little sheet of paper run away. Because with the million of policy's if they don't like you for any reason or they just want you gone they can find something even if other officers violated it and fire you because of it. Now if they just have a little sheet of paper well if you do something and they don't have a policy on it then its your ass on the line not the department. Lets say you had a vehicle chase and something went wrong, because the department doesn't have a policy on it and you acted at your own will its your ass on the line not the departments.

So what is the right size? About a full size 3 ring binder would be a great department even if it goes to 1 and 1/2. Just don't let it be to much or to little.

Yes, I gonna go to law enforcement.

Why? Well, I wanted to be a lot of things through my life, but what also I always wanted is to help people and to protect them. Also I'm a pretty talanted analyst and explorer, I'm good with a law study and I'm more or less good with people, which could make a nice investigator of me.

Sadly, there's reasons why I unable to and don't want to join law enforcement in Russia. Currently, I plan to move to U.S., where, after the naturalization, I gonna enlist to a local police academy. Currently the most interesting opportunity for me is Atlanta PD, GA.

Also, I have a dream of joining some kind of an international investigating body of UN, ICC or such.

I'm currently applying to be a California Highway Patrol Explorer, and eventually a trooper. Growing up I've always admired police officers. Quite a few family friends are CHP officers so seeing that close up solidified my love for law enforcement.

Technically you will be a CHP Officer not trooper :P

Anyways on topic, I have no idea yet. I know for a fact there is no way in hell that after around 21ish years of sitting in school I will want to have an office job. This limits me to a career out and about.

Due to my current career as a ocean lifeguard, I may end up sticking with medical. However, if I do go the LEO route, I have a rough plan:

I have already become somewhat fluent in spanish through 9 years of learning and still have one more year.

I hope to get a minor in Italian in college and with my experience in Spanish can take a test to be able to mark that on my resume aswell.

I will either be getting a degree in Criminal Science or some other criminology course(Although I have heard other degrees are sometimes more appealing to departments).

So by the end of the day, I will know 3 languages(maybe 4) as well as have a college course and prior medical experience.

I have no set plan yet if I go into Medical, right now I am leaning towards Police.

Once I start applying I will probably apply for either a local PD around me now or one near where I plan going to college. Maybe Portland Police!

But all that is ages away, currently I am focused on school and my social life. As when I am an officer, I will probably be looking back at this time of my life.

Yes, the requirements include a U.S. citizenship, maybe there's an exceptions I don't know about, but generally you've got to be an American.

Here goes Investigator Tkachenko (uh-huh  ), Atlanta Transit  :whistling:

You could move to England and live there for 3 years and after that join the Met Police :) Then you'll get to play with tasers and drive cooler cars then the Swedish Police :)

You must be a citizen to be an American police officer. That takes at least 5 years after you arrive in the US, unless you serve in the military, in which case you'd still have to wait the length of your active-duty commitment. Legal immigrants may be cops, but only after they become naturalized citizens, not while they are just lawful permanent residents.

@Pengi: That sounds like a good plan to pursue the job.

I definitely plan to get into law enforcement. I honestly don't know what sparked the interest but ever since I could talk I've been saying I was going to be a police officer. I would literally go crazy having to work a desk job every day, school is really pushing it as it is. I crave action, and police work is the perfect job for me as I get action and get to serve and give back to my community every day. I'm currently working as a First Responder (EMR) and will be starting with my local volunteer fire department next year. Then a year after that my application goes into my local PD. By the time I work in the police force I'll have training in medical, fire, and law enforcement. Pretty much everything I plan to do revolves around serving and protecting the community. There's a special feeling you get when you see someone's face light up after helping them in any situation, that's the thing that keeps me inspired to look past the obvious dangers of all my jobs.

Yup, you dont need to become a citizen in order to join the Met police. The plus side is you're not that far away from friends and family as if you moved to the states :)
