Phonebloks - A Phone Worth Keeping

Featured Replies

I don't think many people are going to buy them. It is a great idea, but many people looking for a new phone would rather get an iPhone, if they don't know much about Technology.

Already been debunked a few months ago by some electrical engineers. Just a massive social engineering campaign to get the founders (which don't know anything about electronics or engineering) some press.

Perhaps also a scam? Note how unlike other crowdfunded ideas they are accepting donations directly from their site (without a verifying middleman) for something which is completely just an idea without even a technical plan.

I just realized today is the 29th of October

ok.......................

It appears Google and Motorola have stepped in to make this idea actually happen. Codenamed "Ara ", Motorola claims they have been working on a concept very similar to Phonebloks for over a year now. I'm actually interested in seeing what

Google (Motorola's owned by Google) can bring to the table.

I bought my iPhone 5s on Sunday, and I think I'm sticking with it. I love the idea, but I don't think it'll catch on, simply because many people buy phones for the status symbol as well. So, when I pull out my phone at school, everyone seems to be amazed by the look of it and the fingerprint sensor. Again, it's an amazing idea but it seems as though many people are just sticking with the major phone brands for now. I love my phone :)

SCNG FTW!!

They posted this yesterday. I still think that the phone would be much faster if the parts weren't modular, simply due to the fact that the phone's motherboard would have to connect in some indirect way to essential things like the CPU and RAM. For example, on a normal computer (and normal phones) the CPU connects to the motherboard via thousands of pins (the latest intel chips have over 2000 pins), allowing for lighting fast communication with the motherboard. Funneling all this data through only a couple pins (which is what they would have to do) would cause a huge performance drop. It would be like trying to run your computer with your processor plugged in a USB port, it doesn't work nearly as well.
