Colorblind Cop?

Featured Replies

Hello Community,

I NEED YOUR HELP!

I have recently found out that I am Colorblind (red/green), and i think this will grind my dream of becoming a police officer to an immediate halt! From a very young age I have wanted to wear the uniform and help people in need and now this dream may be out of reach.

I know that pretty much every federal agency will not take me, and i presume this will be the case with major city and state police agencies

So my question to you is Do you know any agency be it big or small that may allow me to join their ranks?, I dont care which state i just need something to give me a glimmer of hope!

I beg you!

if they won't take you  a police agency,   an alternate you should seriously consider is firefighting or being a paramedic  both can be just as exciting and rewarding   they tend to be a little more leniate with disabilities

Don't take this the wrong way, but it feels like it's time to shelf that idea. I know that the police department here in Sweden does not allow colorblinds to join. :/

I can only go with the information I have for my country which is that Police Scotland do not (to my knowledge) discriminate against poor sight, all you will have to do is get a certificate from your optician and they will still consider you.

Thanks man I'll look into it, My dad's a cop and he was gutted for me when we found out i was colorblind, i had seen him come home from work every night, take off his hat place it on the side, kneel down and pat my head as i waited for him by the front door, from a very young age, it was a small thing but to me my dad was a hero and someone i looked up to and now I feel like someone has hit me in the stomach with a demolition ball, as i cannot follow in his footsteps and wear with uniform with pride!

This has really hit me hard!

Thanks for the support

no problem

and yeah I was a vol. firefighter  and the thing's you do as a firefighter / paramedic might not being putting people behind bar's  but your still making a huge impact for them  esp cause they only call fire / paramedic when they really really need help

just take the news in stride day by day  call / visit as many local PD's as you can to talk to them about  and see what they say

I know here in Philly I have sports induced asthma  from being little 28 now ( played like 9 different sports up until 2 years ago ) and the LT.  at the academy told me so what  they have a kid come through with bad diabeites  ( no its not the same as color blindness)  but talking with the higher ups can sometimes yield un expected results

Don't know about England but America has the ADA act to protect people with disabillites

I'd make a name for the family in firefighting / paramedic if in th end you can't be  a cop in the end

Good news if you have kid's your son will gave a very very small chance of being color blind and can take the police badge back up

and oh hate to be corney but the chorus says it best  Kelly Clarkson's stronger just listen to the chorus words it helps

I found this article about becoming a police officer while being colorblind: http://www.color-blindness.com/2007/06/08/police-officer-does-color-blindness-matter/

This story is linked in that article: http://www.martymodell.com/colorblindness/devinh.htm

Apparently, there are glasses to help with colorblindness.

"Work and ideas get stolen, then you keep moving on doing your thing."

I did some researching for you, and it doesn't say anywhere a for sure you wouldn't be accepted, my advice, I would enquire to you're eye doctor if there is a way to correct it..

I read this, not sure how much truth there is in it, but it's about a former Michigan State Police Officer being color blind, I just skimmed through it though: http://www.martymodell.com/colorblindness/devinh.htm

Don't let your dreams be ruined by an imperfection.

I'm no doctor, but if I was in your spot.. I'd try to find a way to live with it. Try to distinct the two colors. Don't give up yet!

Everything needs more lights.

If you're in the UK, I'd listen to the UK people more. Standards vary by region. I'd call some UK agencies' recruiting people and ask. They'd know for sure.

Traffic lights typically have three lights in descending order for a reason. You should be fine with traffic stops if those are the only two colors you have an issue with. That being said though, giving descriptions of clothing might be a bit tough. I'd ask someone who's in law enforcement what they think.

This. In fact, based on how red-green colorblindness works genetically, your colorblindness has zero impact on your sons' color vision (the gene is on the X chromosome; girls have an X chromosome from both mother and father, but boys only inherit the chromosome from their mothers - the father's X chromosome doesn't matter for sons.

here in the united states there is a much much higher chance you'll find 1 that'll take you as there is hundred's of town,  city,  and  township police departments

and hundred's of sheriff departments

and hell there's even correction  and probation and parole agengcy's

and like earlier in a post here we are protect by ADA  American's with disabilities acts  basically if you have 1 your are  suppose to get the same chance at a job as opposed to some1 who doesn't have a disability

I cant thank you enough for how supportive you have been, and ive emailed a range of departments from a range of different states, even the U.S. Secret Service just to see if any of them can point me in the right direction, and ive also had a quick look into firefighting oppurtunities

Thanks once again!

No coming to Canada eh? We're pretty similar to the UK and the job wouldn't be as dangerous as a US cop DEPENDING ON THE REGION.

That's... positive thinking?

Anyways, OP, I asked one of the officers here and their response was that it's not possible, since those two colors are important on the job.
