Auxiliary Police

Featured Replies

Auxiliary Police, I've seen alot of mods and pictures from the US saying "Auxiliary Police" but what is it?

Traffic Police?

Or, I don't get what it means...Auxiliary Police..Sounds like...some kind of private Police department

Auxiliary police are the reserves of the regular police. Most of the time, these are volunteers. They don't have the same jurisdiction as a regular police officer but they do have the right to make some arrests or enforce a certain type of law.

Just take a look at wikipedia if you need more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auxiliary_police

They aren't issued guns either. In New York City, they are allowed to investigate domestic disturbances with the assistance of regular officers though.

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

I'm an Auxiliary Police Officer in one of the counties outside of NYC. We assist the regular Police Officers in mundane tasks such as traffic direction, crowd control, and other related duties. In some counties they carry firearms and in other states they have full Police Officer status. In my county we are trained as Peace Officers but are civilians on duty, and we carry everything except a gun.

There are a couple of Auxiliary police officers on this forum I believe. However, as LINY said, the job description, use of weapons and status differ from county to county.
