Hey guys,

My laptop will be here in 2 weeks so I'm getting all my ducks in a row in advance of it's arrival. I need to know a program, compatible with Windows 7 (64 bit), that can open a rar file since most mods and scripts I've looked at seemed to be zipped in this format. I've heard of a program called WinRar but I have also heard that it cost money... Looking for something in the freeware category, thank god GTA IV is on clearance for 16 bucks now...

The trial version is free, it says I've 40 days left but I'm using it more than 3 months.

Use WinRAR, it just has the trial shit to try and make you buy it, but really the trial lasts forever.

Yeah + you can delete the pop-up that comes each start if it annoys you. Just search for some tutorial.

7-Zip is a free good program.

By far the best program i have found is izarc you can find it by searching google it opens all types of files and is 100% free

7-Zip works better than WinRAR and wont nag you to buy it.

I've experienced that WinRAR is much nicer to use from the interface, and if you can read tutorials you can also disable the pop-up that comes up on each start. Also WinRAR integrates much nicer into Windows, since you can download themes for it. Nonetheless I also use 7zip, mostly to create archives in the 7z format which has a beastly compression. I once managed to get a 0% compression rate :D.

Wow! I have only managed 16%. Just about the only reason not to go with 7-Zip I can think of is that it cannot repair archives.

The RAR means Roshal Archive. It is a file format that supports data compression, error recovery, and file spanning.

The filename extension used is .rar for the data volume set.

Show you the steps on how to open the .rar file format:

1. First you need to right click the winrar file>click extract files

2. Choose where you want to put your extracted files, either in C:/ or E:/ or in any documents>Click OK

3. Then it shows up the extracted files.
