Up to now I've just been mixing people's models with other people's textures to get what I want. Last night I sat down and made my first texture after hours of fighting with it. But now I know I can and I'm going to start making more and we'll see happens!

It's likely this is a contention issue between your ISP and our provider. If that's the case, it's unlikely to be a quick fix.
