Encounters with the Police

Recommended Posts

Up until last night, I hadn't encountered the police before. I'd been a good citizen and my local town was fairly quiet which meant the police were hardly called.

Around 11:30pm last night, I, along with three other friends, was walking back along the seafront when we heard this huge ass noise, we looked around and saw this car approaching us from a distance. I thought it was a classic car judging by the sound it was making. As it approached us we noticed it was a brand new Vauxhall Astra, Its tire had been damaged. The tire flew off onto the pavement and the car kept going, sending sparks everywhere but eventually stopped.

We asked the driver if he needed help or anything as he got out of the car but he didn't respond, as he walked around the car, it was obvious he was drunk. We had walked down the road since then and I decided to phone the police, after all, the guy kept trying to get the car started again and he was drunk, I don't think we need that on our roads.

They said they'd see if anyone was in the area to respond so we waited down the road, the guy eventually stumbled down the road so we walked over to his car, this is what we saw:

I realize the picture may be dark so I'll explain it

The tire was completely gone. The front axle was bent beyond believe on this side and some of the rim was still attached, the suspension was wrecked.

The police eventually pulled up and got our details while another car down the road picked up the driver. As we walked home, the police car caught up to us and said they'd need to "pop" round and take my statement, by this time it was around 1:00am and I was shattered. The driver was in handcuffs just on the opposite side of the road to us.

The police never showed up, So I'm guessing they'll be round today.

Oh and they were driving a sweet ass BMW while the one that got the driver was a Ford C-MAX

Just thought I'd post this as this is the most exciting thing to probably happen to my town.

Anyone else got any stories?

Interesting, what were they charging the guy with? Just drink-driving or could they connect other related offences?

I've done a bit of work with police on undercover shoplifting blitzes, that's been pretty fun.

I've also had officers/ex-officers and civilians working in police organisations as lecturers at uni.

Aside from that though my only other interaction really has just been RBTs.

I'm not sure, I suppose I could ask them when they eventually arrive to take my statement.

My guess is drink driving

One thing that happened to a small town I lived in once, was that I saw a police unit perform a traffic stop.

The swedish police car were just standing in front of a building, and on the other side a civilian car pulled up onto the main road.

The police unit also drove up on to that road, and turned on his traffic advisor bar and honked at the car so it would pull over.

That's an amazing story, because in that town it barely happened anything.

If it's anything like Australia, it's very hard to charge someone with driving under the influence once they've left the vehicle, even if it was witnessed. Mostly due to needing a breath sample within a reasonable timeframe to prove that the driver was actually over the limit at the time of driving.

Could be charged with driving an unroadworthy vehicle though, something along the lines of failing to show due care while commandeering a motor vehicle. Dunno.

I have a few actually, some weird, some horrible:

I was walking to work one morning around 5AM, hardly anyone out, a few jogger's, myself and a cop walking the beat, when suddenly there is a LOUD squeeling coming down this soon to be traffic jammed road, when the car drove by all of us, i'd never seen anything like it, 4 underage teenage girl's were in this vehicle and the vehicles damage looked like someone purposely drove the forks of a forklift through the entire side of the car, even the bottom half of the wheel looked like pencil shavings.. the cop called it in, figured they were drunk, but they ended up parking the car at the gas station i worked at, at the time, i checked to see if they were okay, apparently someone stole a forklift from a truck yard in the middle of the night, a 40 pounder was found empty in front of the propane tank.. the girl's were scared shitless, they didn't know what to, so i called their dad and explained what happened, i thought he was gonna kick MY ass for what happened  .......

another one:

When i was in Quebec doing some labour for my mom's boyfriend, some truck driver lost control of his rig, needless to say, his truck was taken away on 5 flatbeds in 5 or more pieces, who knows what happened to him..

My experience with Serbian police is quite horrible. I am mostly pulled over for something that I didn't do so I never get a ticket as I record my driving or have another kind of proof of my innocence. Here's one story:

I remember once I was driving 43 in a 50 km/h zone (They placed a 50 speed limit on a straight country road with no valid reason except to write tickets) and I was looking around the window as I was going slow, I spotted hidden patrol car next to the bushes and continued. From out of nowhere, I see that patrol car speeding without any lights or siren towards me and overtaking me. Window is rolled down, police stick says STOP POLICE. I stop and officer approaches.

God day sir, license and registration please. Reason for stopping is using a mobile phone (I am like wtf, are you mentally retarded? I forgot my mobile phone at home and he's stopping me for using a mobile phone??!!).

I give him my license and registration and started arguing. After 10 mins of arguing, I won and I didn't get a ticket. Even if I got a ticket I could appeal call log from my operator in court and still wouldn't pay for it!

On the other hand, our special anti-terrorist units are cool guys not like these brainwashed traffic and patrol units. I know few of them and later I got to know the whole squad.

I got stopped one night, and I'm still not sure why.

It was probably September or early October here in Florida (this was a good seven or eight years ago), and a rainstorm had just passed through so it was nice and cool. We needed bread, so I decided to walk since the store was only a half-mile away. I got to the intersection where I had to cross to get to the store, when these two officers get out of their parked car and stop me. They asked what I was doing, I told them I was walking to the store. They asked whether it was kind of wet to go for a walk, and I said precisely jack, because I was just some high school kid. Then they asked for an ID, which I didn't have given the fact that I don't typically bring my wallet to buy two dollars worth of bread. They also mentioned that I resembled someone they'd been looking for, but let me go (my theory being that I wasn't acting tough, but rather scared and confused), I bought some bread, and went home.

Being in public safety I deal with them plenty! One night I woke up and looked outside. The house across the road was surrounded by sheriff's deputies, ambulances, and fire trucks. Being a town of 1000 people, i drove down to the fire station to see what was up. I pulled up to the stop sign right before the station and saw a cop sitting there. He was fairly new and didn't know me. I turned left to go to the station and he followed. He pulled me over and came up to talk to me. My window was broken, so I had to open the door. We chatted and then he took my license to run. He was sitting in the rand new CV ( i never shut my door) and gets on the PA. Suddenly, I hear "DRIVER, STAY IN THE VEHICLE!" "DRIVER, SHUT YOUR DOOR!" so I did what was told. I don't think a 16 year old that works for the local EMS is going to run, but what ever. I did tell my boss (Who is the undersheriff) and he laughed. Needless to say, that cop AND his friend are gone after an almost shooting of an innocent college kid.

Uhm, what exactly was his probable cause to initiate a traffic stop on you? I also think he was just sitting there waiting for the license to come back, and probably remembered from the academy that opening the driver door is out of the ordinary and signifys a person that's nervous/attempting to run, and then decided to yell out you, but meh, must've been pretty freaky to hear that, but I'm not surprised he's no longer with that PD.

Help us, help you!

Here's a statement from the incident that led to his and Officer Sarnicki's firing:

(note: the person who wrote this printed off 100s of copies and put on every windshield of every car in town.)

He apparently tried to pull the kid over for not stopping at a stop sign. Kid didn't see him, rookie thought it was a pursuit, called in PD, SO, NDHP, and USBP. He aimed his service weapon at the kid's head, which if he had shot, would go straight through to the passenger's body. FAIL.

Officer Sarnicki stated "I tapped my brakes and then took off." He then claimed to follow us for 3 and a half miles. Neither Nikita nor I saw lights until right

outside DCHS. As soon as Nikita notified me of the lights I pulled into the DCHS parking lot. I pulled into the school parking lot, radio down, window down, hands in sight. EVERYTHING was ready for a routine traffic stop.

Before I knew it there was a LOADED pistol, SAFETY OFF, in my face. My face was parralel to Nikita's!

I was abruptly throw in the back of the officer's squad car. He then went to heavily interrogate Nikita. The officer at no point gave no reason as to why this was all happening.

He stated he "Was pulling us over for an imcomplete stop", yet his lights weren't noticed until we were by the high school. Officer Sarnicki said(while in his squad car) something about me being cold from the weather.

I was shaking from SHEER terror. During this shaking, I had the liberty of watching him handle the interrogation with as much care as a four year old throwing a tantrum.

HE COULDN"T EVEN READ THE MIRANDA RIGHTS CARD. He referred to Ms. Nikita Haugenoe as a 'He" ............................ and this officer gets to hold a pistol to our heads?

Was down in Hollywood riding my bike, saw four traffic stops within 6 blocks. lol

Also saw the new 2012 caprice the LAPD are using: 2012-Caprice-LAPD.jpg

The most they've said to me was rolling down the window and saying, "Yo, get a headlight on the bike man." and driving off. I love the LAPD :)

I've reported a burning dumpster once. Police and a first response Fire dept car arrived. That's the only contact I recall so far, but I'm pretty sure I had one before, just can't remember it.

Well, having done a 3 months internship with the federal police, I've had plenty of encounters with the police. I basically accompanied detectives everywhere they went. Did some fantastic things including house searches, arresting drug mules at the airport, excavating a murder victim, listen to wire taps, attend interrogations, shooting practice,... Not to forget responding code 3 several times in undercover police cars. It was just heartbraking to go back to studying again since a lot of the detectives became good friends. Hopefully, I'll see them again shortly, when I'm a full sworn police officer.

Here, you can see me on the right in a white protective suit, helping the detectives to set up a sieve in order to search for human remains between all the dirt. It was very cold and wet that day so we all tried to keep warm since those white suits don't offer much protection against the weather. This picture was taken by the local press. I do have my own pictures but I cant disclose those since I am still bound by confidentiality.

The person with the red hood is from the Disaster Victim Identification unit while the man in the camouflage vest is from Dovo, the army's bomb squad. He was there because of all the bombs from the Second World War we excavated as well.

There's a speedcorrection of 5KM/PH, so you were driving more than 3KM/PH too fast.

Yeah, you're right. It registered 58km/h but still I don't think it's that big of a deal :|

What sticks out in my mind the most is working for the Sheriff's dept and having to get certified to carry pepper spray.

Getting certified meant being sprayed with it and let me tell you it is some very nasty stuff.

Later on I left the Sheriff's dept to go work as a correctional officer with NC since more money was involved and better benefits.

During the training, pepper spray certification came up and once again I had to get sprayed.

I now have a commercial drivers license and drive a truck since no pepper spray is involved lol.
