2019... a year of speed

Hi all,

It's a bit late to say it, but happy 2019 to everyone and we hope you all have a great year!

Over the years, we've certainly gotten a little flack for the speed of our downloads, and for varying reasons, our optimizations over the years have not been enough for everyone.

This hasn't went unnoticed, and this year one of our main priorities will be speeding up the site and downloads.

We're starting 2019 strong, and we've introduced some measures already that will speed the site up for everyone:

  • All core site resources are now served through our new global CDN system.
  • All downloads are now served through our new global CDN system.
  • Our edge servers have been updated to support the latest web standards, including but not limited to HTTP2 and Brotli.
  • Core site resources are now optimized on the fly, and targetted for your browser. For example, if you're running Google Chrome, images and other site resources will be sent via the bandwidth-reducing WEBP format.

This is just the first step. There's still work ahead of us and room for improvement. Later this year, we're also expecting updates from our forum software provider that are focussed on speed.

We hope these changes and the future changes to come will help improve the experience for everyone.

At least you now have at leat 1 server in the Asia-Pacific area, instead of relying on the US server. Now you just have to worry about dingos eating your downloads. 😆

You are really gullible.

You are using the WRONG right theme!

We've made a few more changes in the past week or so to further improve the LCPDFR.com experience.

  • Introducing our Oceania LCPDFR.com region
For visitors from Australia, New Zealand and the rest of Oceania, we've deployed an LCPDFR.com region server to the region. This will provide improved speeds when using the website from this region. Oceania now joins the following regions in having their own LCPDFR.com regional server: US East, US West and Europe.
You can see what region server you are connected to by highlighting over the bug icon at the bottom right of the site, on the footer.
  • Updating our servers with the latest standards
All LCPDFR.com region servers and our CDN provider now support TLS 1.3, along with 0-RTT. These new standards should help reduce the time it takes to connect to LCPDFR.com, and give some speed improvements across the board.
  • Improved monitoring
To keep costs with associated with running a community on the scale of LCPDFR.com minimised, we run a lot of our own infrastructure instead of relying on managed services and overpriced bandwidth. However, this does mean we have to keep a track on a lot of what's going on by ourselves. To do so, we have a complete in-house monitoring dashboard that shows us how everything is performing. This allows us to identify and fix issues a lot sooner.
A small snippet can be viewed here.

Most of these changes are certainly behind-the-scenes. We're also working on more website features (including some new slightly competitive things for LSPDFR Sync!) and hope to have more new and exciting things to share in the near future.
