NYPD Shoot " Unarmed " Man

Featured Replies

Bystanders shout and cry as Police in NYC secure a shooting scene in which a suspect took a firing stance holding a pistol like object in his hand and was killed by the police. Apparently he was " unarmed " but carrying a metal pipe and holding it like a handgun up to people.

Gun or blow torch nozzle?, Can you tell quick enough to potentially conserve or take a life?. Thoughts or opinions on this shooting?. I think it's a clean shoot being that he knew he was motioning the item like a firearm, and using it intimidatingly as such. He was subsquently shot by police when aiming it at them, yet the bystanders shed tears. Sad in your book or just straight up Darwinism at work?.

It's obvious that he was mentally disturbed. Iirc he was bipolar. And as far as I know,he wasn't a criminal. Another thing to note, he was pointing that pipe at several other people first, causing 3 people to call 911, saying he was pointing what they thought was a gun at people.

Aside from obesity we have a real big problem with mental health here in the United States. It's honestly saddening.

Three separate callers identified this guy as having a firearm and stated that he menacing people with it.  He's captured on surveillance footage repeatedly aiming at people with what looks to be a firearm - perhaps the most damning photo is the one below.  Then he assumes a shooting stance and aims at the police officers that responded to the multiple 911 calls.  Justified 100% IMO.  The fact that people feel the need to protest this shoot en-masse is mind boggling to me.

The biggest problem with it?  Lack of empathy and understanding. Most Americans are completely ignorant and have no interest in learning about mental health.

In the first pic, it really does look like a gun.  Strangest looking metal pipe that I've seen.

Umm... There is empathy and understanding torward these people and we have learned a great deal about mental health.  But that is not the issue.  The issue lies with the mental health professionals and individuals not allowing a mental health professional to diagnose the fully so that they may get help.

I put this on another topic but it applies here.  It is sad about the trust with psychologist but it is a fair and reasonable position that we are in.  Maybe with the next generation of politician's we may get unfounded and unwarranted trust back in them.

The 7th and 8th paragraph will say a lot on the issue of mental illness decisions.

This is just a link to the distrust that flows around the mental heath debate that many of the new generation do not know about, or they refuse to look at.  Mental heath is a major issue in society period.  But in the case of enacting laws that will go on the books, and more than likely never get off,  everyone needs to be smart about the subject and question anything and everything that could go wrong with the situation.  So remember that, when you call for mental heath reform, you are allowing another individual that may be plagued by there own political belief (that includes religion) to make a decision that could determine your future.  Also take in mind that someone could be perfectly fine one day and the next they can snap.

It is extremely sad that ther are individuals out there that need help and do not have it and I wish that they would take the treatment that is available so they may get better.

May this individual rest in peace.

Some understand, but it's a minority.  Being someone that has high functioning Autism (albeit not medically diagnosed), I can tell you that most people don't understand at all.  Granted, most of my experiences come from the 90s and early 00s when I was growing up, but even now, I still see how people don't understand mental illness and treat the mentally ill like trash.  Most of the time, parents just want to throw their mentally ill child on meds and hope that fixes them.  Others, who absolutely don't understand at all, refuse to even try.  I'll give the proper credit, we have come a long ways, but there are still plenty of places and people in the US that are dangerously ignorant towards people with said illnesses.  (Disabilities can also be included in this discussion, though.)

Mental illness is overall difficult to understand, even by the professional's, and yes people dont understand it but primarily people do not know how to go about dealing with it.

Also I wouldn't say that parent's want to throw there child on pills and hope that it fixes them, they are taking a doctor's advice and recommendation on what to do with there child.  Key word "DOCTOR"

One thing I continuously see almost week is that alot of people do not want to be treated and if someone does not want to be treated there is not much that you can do without a judge's order to make them get help.  Treatment for most people is usually beer and drug's,  I see it every morning at 6-7 at the gas station.

I have taken people to the mental health clinic and it takes at least 3 days to a week to somewhat diagnose them.  The problem is that they will tell you to your face that they want help and less than 2r hour's later they ar back on the street where you found them.

Mental expert's have failed us, before, and to leave the decisions up to them is, in most people's eyes, dangerous.

Guess that when he pointed that pipe at the cops the only alternative they had was to wait and see if any shots are fired. Which would be both stupid and dangerous. Play bad games, win bad prizes I guess.

On a separate note, in a country with one of most easily-accessible firearms (in the civilized world) mental health should definitely be a priority.

All the people cheering the killing of an obviously mentally ill man....you're sick. You're just not good people.

Legal justification is complicated and figured out in court. In my unprofessional opinion I think its justified, but I'm not going to celebrate his death.
