CANTON, OH (WOIO) -

According to the Stark County Veterinary Emergency Clinic, Canton Police K-9 officer Jethro suffered several gunshot wounds early Saturday morning.

The staff at the animal clinic says that they working on stabilizing him and that he seems to be coming around in regards to the swelling on his brain, which was the major concern.  The swelling has gone down somewhat but is not completely gone and medical professionals are concentrating on managing Jethro's pain and keeping his blood pressure low.  He was brought in some time around 2 a.m.

It has not been confirmed exactly how many times Jethro was shot because the staff continues to look for more points of entry as he is being slowing turned in different directions as of 10 a.m.

Canton Police confirm that Jethro was responding to a burglary call at Fishers Food on Harrison Avenue when the suspect exchanged gunfire with police.

The suspect was struck in the leg during the incident and was taken to the hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening wound.

Check back for updates as they become available.

We can't Stop here, This is Whelen Country.

Not sure if the law is the same in your state, although in most places across the world a K9 is considered a police officer, so if the dog dies due to his injuries then the suspect is going to be charged with murder of a police officer.

If you want to me reply as soon as possible, then either quote or @CouthInk4  me as i'll be notified, a general reply will not notify me

Yeah, he's considered Police Officer.

I remember going to the Canton Municipal Building and City Hall back in middle school. I met a lot of great people, among them are a few that I still remember. The first person I met was Judge Frank Forchione, at the time though he was a Canton city prosecutor. He was, and still is, a very firm man, and his no-nonsense judicial practices reflect that. The second, was a Canton K-9 officer and his furry partner, who for the life of me I can not remember their names, which is regrettable. They were extremely kind, answering questions, showing off their vehicle, even allowing me to take a video of the lights. These guys are a really cool group, and it is a damn shame that this happened. Just glad to see the outpouring of community support. I will definitely be at the funeral services to honor K9 Jethro.

I've personally met Jethro and Officer Davis. Both were absolutely great officers and Jethro was such a nice, well-behaved pup. Truly a hero and he will surely be missed. :(
