Would this be a sensible computer?

Featured Replies

So my laptop died, and my new one will have integrated graphics. As I have a job these days, I can afford to also get a desktop for gaming.

Here is the build I'm looking at. Does it seem generally sensible? It's a Skylake build with an i5, GTX 970, DDR4 RAM, an H170 chipset (I don't plan on overclocking or using SLI), and an SSD.

Quite a nice build from the looks of things.

I think you should be alright but potentially the EVGA card and the power supply might cause a bit of space issues. I have that combo (different models) and the PSU has thickly braided cables that don't like moving much, combine that with the colossal EVGA card and you have a minor issue of things not fitting nicely.

Personal recommendation would be to spend a bit extra and get a second SSD or a high speed HDD, 1TB or so if you down the HDD route. Obviously the SSD is faster but they usually are smaller capacity. You'll find you'll fill that 500GB SSD pretty quickly if you want it for gaming etc.

The case looks nice, but I would be mildly concerned over it's air flow. Again EVGA cards are colossal so, imagine a thick heat producing wall half way down the case. Buy extra fans if necessary, or if you just like fans. I have 5 :D (8 if you include GPU and CPU mounted ones)

Other than that, a pretty solid build.

Looks like a pretty good build, especially since the graphics card has 4GB dedicated memory, I can't comment on the PSU, however I can say for sure that 16GB RAM is more than enough, and if the motherboard is future-proof enough, then you can always add more. :D
