Featured Replies

This is really tragic because usually there is not a lot of police deaths in michigan but it happened on august 28th when Trooper Wolf was hit and dragged for miles by a vehicle. RIP Trooper Wolf. Read more http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2015/08/michigan_state_trooper_chad_wo_1.html

Wow, it does say on that article that the info is unreleased about why he didn't stop early, maybe he didn't even know.
Hope for the best for his wife or other family and hope they can pull thorough this.

I'd like a better description of the vehicle and maybe a photo of it as well, so that we can see how this could have happened. Where was the officer standing? How fast was the car going? How did the driver not notice anything at all? You don't just drag a police officer under your car for miles it just doesn't seem possible. A real tragedy nonetheless and condolences to the family.

Most police deaths are traffic related, whats stopping them from fixing this issue? Is it just assumed that a certain number of cops are going to die on the side of the highway, or is there anything we can do?

Well for one people need to learn to drive, some of these people I see on the roads should have never passed driving class.

If you watch the dashcam videos of most of these incidents it is usually because the driver wasn't paying attention and/or did not slow down or move over one lane which most state laws require when approaching an emergency vehicle. Most of the time the driver is either intoxicated or distracted with something else (texting). There are some cases where people see an officer on the side of the road and intentionally hit them.

Which is why I wonder they don't require you pull to the LEFT side of the road?

Because there is oncoming traffic on the left side of the road. If you are on a two lane road are you going to cross in front of oncoming traffic to pull over to the shoulder of the wrong lane? And even if you are on a multi-lane highway with a shoulder on both sides in each direction the left shoulder is not only usually smaller but the left lane is the fast lane.

Damn. It just seems like streets aren't built to accommodate traffic stops.

They aren't. They are meant to keep traffic moving, that's why when things like traffic stops and traffic crashes happen it screws up the flow of traffic. Just a hazard of the job, that is why pretty much every state has a law that says you have to either move over one lane (if possible) or slow down a certain amount below the speed limit when approaching an emergency vehicle.

Right, makes sense. Hopefully one day we can come up with some sort of system or design that can help make traffic stops safer for police officers, though I'm sure it's not law enforcement's top priority right now.

When I was in the States, a neighbour gave me a lift from work once. He was texting with two cells the whole time and barely paid attention to the road. I asked him to stop, and he replied that everyone does that and that's very hard to prove, so he ain't scared. That really pissed me off. At this high speed on dark roads he just doesn't give a fuck about anyone else but himslef. I'd revoke his license for a year or two.
