Gaming system under $700

Featured Replies

Hey there.please get back to me when you can. I wanted to know what is your current setup and what monitor do you recommend to buy. also im trying to stay under $700.. there are pc's with a setup at about $500 and run like one thats worth $1000 let me know ill be waiting. keep up the good work guys

My current set up is in my signature, I can't give an exact number. But I'd say for the machine I built a couple months back I spent $650 after taxes.

Part|Current prices

GPU: MSI Nvidia GTX 750 | $145

Processor: AMD FX 6300 | $110

Mobo: MSI 970a-G46  | $80

Power: 650-Watt Ultra | $50

Heatsink: Cooler Master 212 Evo | $35

Case: Ultra Defender Mid Tower Case | $70

Memory: PNY 2x4Gb DDR3 | $130

Blu-Ray Drive: LG | $55

Current Price Before tax: $675

*My budget was between $500-$600, I obviously went over, and I already have HDDs and Windows so they're not included in the total cost. If you're on a tight budget and trying to get the most bang for your buck keep an eye out for any sales. That's how I got my bluray drive and a few other extra upgrades in my small budget.

As for monitors I have no opinion there. I use tv screens as my display, so that's obviously not in the budget. :P

You could do this, but:

GPU: MSI or Asus GTX 960-$200

Processor: AMD FX 6300-$110

Mobo: MSI 970a-G46-$80

Power: Anything under $50*

Heatsink: Cooler Master 212 Evo-$30 (or save some money if you are not going to overclock, and use the stock cooler)

Case: NZXT S340-$50

Memory: G.Skill 2x4GB DDR3-1600-$70

Blu ray/disk reader: Must be external, S340 does not have bays for that. Can find some for less than $30

You could probably spend more on the power supply or motherboard with this build. That would be recommended.

I Wish the 960 had been out when I built my machine.

That's what $580ish on your build without the heatsink... I like it! (The one issue i had with this build was rediculous high temps and it's a common issue with this CPU/Mobo that they run hot... in hindsight I think it was just the thermal paste that comes from the factory was just awful, but I decided to "nuke" the problem and go with the Evo... $30 to protect a $600 investment is a rationale choice... Also I'm not recommending that particular mobo, not that I've had any problems with it, but if you do your research like 9/10 bad reviews are because of it breaking at high temps when overclocking or upgrading to the 8300... A good mobo is worth the money, I was on a tight budget and decided to gamble with it. Its done fine @ stock speeds for me.)

The GTX 960 doesn't perform as well as a 750.

Wow hanks guys for the info. Well i really need to know if I should stick to the i7 5820k with a good motherboard or go with AMD , im so confused cause so many people like both..help me out..what would be a good setup under $800

If your are not going to do any content creation, an i5-4690k might be a less expensive but as powerful option.  Intel's i7 processor has more cores in comparison to an i5, but these "cores" cannot be utilized by most modern games. Think of it this way: If you have one math problem, having more people in the same room won't help solve that problem faster unless each of them can be given a problem at the same time (which most games don't do for more than 4 cores). For now, 4 cores is the norm.  If you want to stay with an i7, it doesn't need to be a x99 processor like the 5820k.  A z97 i7 processor will be cheaper, and retain most of the performance of an x99.  Spending $100 more on a graphics card will get you much more performance in a game then spending $100 extra for an processor with more cores and a more expensive motherboard.  Again, having more cores isn't helpful unless you are using an application that can benefit, like Adobe's creative suite.  In short, i5 for games, i7 for content creation.

That's a high-end CPU it costs about $400, that's half your budget just on a CPU. (To be honest for a gaming rig you don't need anything any where need that powerful...I was originally going to use a low end i5.) If you're going to spend extra money invest in a good GPU it'll make a huge difference over CPU. If you're determined to get something better than the FX-6300, try AMD's FX-8300 it's the same processor that they use in some High end gaming builds and it's under $200.

When it comes to debating AMD vs Intel basically if you're price conscious go with AMD, they usually have the best performance to dollar ratio. If you want the fastest processors and are willing to pay extra money then Intel wins hands down.

Using PC Partpicker I threw together something like this

CPU: AMD FX-8350 - $167

Motherboard: Asus M5A99FX - $134

Memory: Corsair 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR3 - $72

GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 960 2GB - $209

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB - $53

Case: NZXT Source 220 - $45

Power: Corsair CX 600W - $40

DVD Player: Asus  - $17

Windows 8.1 - $97

Total: $794

Gta tends to run better on Intel, also intel is way better, but more expensive. So keep that in mind. IMO, dont spend to little on the mobo, but definitely not too much. Get something in the middle, also I would get the i5 4690k if your on a budget, so you can get more room for a gpu. I personally care more about gpus than cpus, but my specs are still great in both regards. Remember you can always upgrade though :P

Edit: the person above me literally just said just about the same exact thing, lmao. I shoud have read all the posts...

Thanks guys. I think I will go with Intel. That was my original direction with intel. I will look at your guys specs and see if that is something I can put together and feel happy with. I was reading that i think the GTX 970 were having problems? is that true

It seems like you're heading way out of your original budget here. A good CPU/motherboard together will most likely cost somewhere from 300 to 350. A 970 is another 350. That's 700 right there. Then, you need the power supply to run that. That's going to be $80 to $100. 800 of your budget. The case will be 45 to 50. Then, you need the RAM. That's going to be around $65. So with the Intel processor, it's going to add on a few hundred dollars to your build.

And yes, the 970 was having problems using anything larger than the 3.5GB of VRAM. However, this is not such a big deal. And the card that RunnGTX and I were referring to is the 960, not the 970. The 960 is not quite as powerful, but is a budget card.
