Star Citizen

Featured Replies

Can't believe that no one has brought this up yet (unless I'm blind and someone actually has).

For those that don't already know, Star Citizen is an upcoming space sim that is set to be released in the next few years or so. it got most of its attention during its Kickstarter campaign where it has raised the most out of any game. Now, after Kickstarter, the game has received $66 million in funds.

It's a very hard game to describe, but think of it as Mass Effect, except in first person and in a persistent online universe. This basically means you can free roam space and be able to walk around in cities/space ports. You can also be anything you want...you can be a trader, space trucker, bounty hunter, miner, mercenary, or even a pirate; it's all up to you. There will also be a FPS portion of the game, which includes boarding actions on other player's ships.

The game is now in pre-alpha and modules are being released to backers to test. Currently, the Hangar and Dog Fighting Module is out. The Planetside and FPS module are set to come out next year.

I don't think I've ever been this excited about a game...ever. It even tops my excitement for GTA V on PC.

"Aren't you ashamed?" - Nurse Ratched

I had the choice between pre-ordering Star Citizen or it's competitor Elite: Dangerous, after a brief thought I went with Elite due to the legacy of the game series. Star Citizen does look amazing so far, but they've made some bold promises and I'm just not sure if they'll be able to fulfill them. That being said, Elite: Dangerous has done the exact same thing.

The creator of Star Citizen, Chris Roberts, also has quite an extensive history with space sims (none directly connected with the Star Citizen universe, as far as I'm aware). Although they are all pretty old and not graphically amazing in any way, but he does have a long history. That's why everyone said he "came back from the dead" when he first announced Star Citizen.

That said, I've pledged 275$ to the game and I have no regrets. Fortunately, they are able to back up their, indeed, quite bold promises with what currently exists, what they've shown in live gameplay demos, commercials, ships and the like.

It's either that or Elite: Dangerous for me. X-Rebirth was fun for a bit, but was getting boring with all the weird glitches. But I love the idea, and I hope it can come to life. If it get good reviews, a oculus rift may be the next purchase I make :P

Invenio, Investigatio, Imperium

Wow, looks pretty awesome.

Might delve into it more after I get a new PC.

Like Zelyth pointed out, Chris Roberts isn't exactly a stranger to the space sim genre either. The designers of both Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen have tons of experience behind them. And while you are right that Chris Roberts has made some bold promises, even if they only meet half of it, I'd be happy. Just the ability to fly around in space and walk around your ship/space cities makes me giddy.

The Anvil Gladiator was just released to the Hangar recently. It looks amazing (lighting issues aside):
