Gotham (2014 TV series)

Well, for starters I'd like to say that I'm not into that superhero bullstuff too much. I liked first and second Batman movies, but the whole idea of some superhuman/superpowerful/super-well-built sky-flying ninja-style crime fighter (or evil fighter in general) made me wince. Crime fighting is a hard and dirty work, so ordinary cops may be considered those heroes, no need for bats, thanks.

But the series are something different. Here we have a touch of a fantastic antiutopia in shape of a large, rainy, sprawling  city filled with crime and criminals, where business is money and money is all, no that 'evil for evil' stuff. And that's the place where a cop hopes to do his job. The place reminds me of Sin City with this atmosphere.

For now, only two episodes are out, and I love it so far. Ben Mckenzie, the guy I remember as a patrolman in Southland, certainly learned his lesson on the West coast. Maybe he'll do more good here, on the East side. His partner looks very natural to me: a scared bent copper who knows how to do it but lost his enthusiasm long time ago.  I'm also familiar with Don Falcone: that's major Rawls from Baltimore city PD, homicide, The Wire. And I especially like the Wayne kid. Usually it's hard to find a teen who can act good.

All in all, it's not a masterpiece, of course (only films made before 1980's are masterpieces :D) but it's good. So tell me, how do you feel towards it and would you take a look at these series?

  • Holy shit this sounds great. I absolutely adored Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, and if this is similar, count me in!

Does anyone else think James Gordan is very similar to Cole Phelps from L.A. Noire? They look and sort of act the same. And are both the honest cop in a pretty corrupt police department

  • I agree, Although that's why i said you'll have to forget everything you learnt from the other Batman media.. The creators have re-written the characters back story so everything has changed, whether

I saw the ad for this on 5 USA, does anyone know when it first airs in the UK? It just said October

OK, so just read that this first airs on Channel 5 on Monday 13 October at 9. Dammit, new NCIS is on 5 USA at Mondays at 9, I'll still watch the first episode though and see how it goes.

As an avid Batman fan, i always look forward to seeing new batman tv series. And when i read about this is was keen to see how they potrayed the characters. We always see the Batman side with the villians but we barely see the backstory/origin of it all like how the Wayne's died, what Bruce did as a child, how did Gordon overcome the corruption of the GCPD etc.

I do like this series, although i notice some flaws that i really don't like, mainly how they potray the characters. the biggest thing i don't like is the Harvey Bullock character, they've potrayed him as a corrupt cop who has connections within the mafia, When this is not the case at all, Harvey is a good cop who is just lazy at doing what he does, I don't like how they call Selina Kyle 'Cat', at that age she was just trying to survive, she didn't really get into the burglary stuff intil she was older, so being called Cat would be irrelevant as she would get that nickname from Catwoman. same with Pamela Isely, people called her Ivy which wouldn't have happened since she adapted the name Poision Ivy after her accident which left her mutated that's how she adapted the name. I also don't like the way they're potraying Penguin, to me he should be more in-control and bossy. in the show he is more of a whimp.

Although no Show is perfect, especially when it's something like Batman that has had different universes created by different people, they change things all the time so i'll get used to it. but with this "creation" I really do like it.

The thing with Harvey is I think that they tried a realistic approach: if all the cops at some point at the time are given the same choice Gordon was given (to do something for the mafia or die), Harvey would be involved in that. I know that many police have deep contacts with the crime world. In a city like Gotham that might be the only way of solving a case. Bullock reminds me of an L.A. Noire character too: Galloway, the homicide cop.

I'm not a huge fan of the Batman universe so I can't judge on other things you pointed out but I think it may possibly be an original approach from the director :)

Yeah! He also reminds me of a real life person Serpico, who was an honest detective in a corrupt NYPD. That ended really bad for him, however.

For now I only feel tense towards some cases, like The Balloon Man. That... That really was far-fetched in my opinion.

Also, I apologize for not posting in this thread for quite a time! Only recently managed to watch the rest of series.

I'm just watching it on Channel 5 every Monday, just seen the episode where the hitman kills all the influencial people of the vote for the Arkham Asylum. Next episode it looks like some poison thing. (Please no one tell me what happens)

I never really watched Batman but I'm really enjoying this series, I've seen all of the first 4 (I think) episodes. I sort of see Bullock as a lazy cop instead of a corrupt one, especially in the one about the Arkham Asylum vote. Gordon sort of seems exactly like Phelps from LA NOIRE (as ive mentioned above. That one with the black and red hair (don't know her name) looks like shes planning to take over falcone. Penquin looks like he wants more power and Gordon just wants to stop all the corruption in the GCPD it seems.

I also find it curious how they mixed up different times in series. Gordon and Bullock drive that classic Dodge and use modern cellphones. Standard patrol car is Dodge too, and clearly GCPD uses more modern vehicles. Cars on the streets are from eighties but a modern one sometimes shows up.

Well they cant get everything right. I think the cars they use represent the era it is in. Even though I haven't got a clue what they are as I don't know many 70's or 80's American cars, besides the charger and challenger

I wish they would have preserved the NYPD Blue color scheme. Now it's a bit weird, having NYPD-like unifroms with all-black cars and red lighbars.

But it isn't NYPD. It's GPD (Or is it GCPD?) Even though (I presume) its filmed in NY. But I agree it feels a bit odd seeing black cars with lightbars.

Yeah, the only resemblance GCPD has with NYPD is the city it's based on.. Gotham City has always been based upon New York City.

just remember that GCPD is fictional, so it doesn't represent any kind of Law Enforcement.. plus think of it as a whole new department.. Like the LAPD, NYPD, MDPD etc.. they all have different styles to make their department unique. GCPD isn't meant to look like any other department apart from what they want it to look like.

Regarding the time it was set in, Gotham is set in Modern day.. But Ben Mckenzie said in an interview that they liked it unique so they added old cars. more of a modern day with an old twist. which i think is actually pretty good. in every Batman (apart from Nolan's movies) the GCPD cars have always been based on oldish looking cars that are from the 70's to the 90's.

Really? I thought it was set in the 70's or 80's because of the cars they used.

This was taken from another internet site.

Gotham is not set in any particular time period: Okay, this has been out there a bit, but Heller had a nice quote elaborating on the show’s timeless quality: “It’s a mash-up, to use the modern phrase,” he said. “If today Batman exists, then this world is the past. But it’s everybody’s past, an 18-year-old’s past and a 54-year-old’s past. So in your memory, the past is all mashed up together. So in this Gotham, it’s a kind of timeless world. It’s yesterday, it’s today, and it’s tomorrow all at the same time, because that’s the world that dreams live in.”

EDIT: Although this isn't connected to the other universes, that's why there is no time period, it's the past (which would've been around the time period of the 80's to the 90's if it was going by Gordon's and Bruce's age depicted in a Batman today) mashed into the present.. so Batman would be created in the future. My guess is, that you need to forget everything you have learnt during different Batman media.. And re-imagine it as if it has happened today with Batman not even thought of yet. Although that being said, as there is no time period.. the creators might have left it up to the viewers to decide what time period it is.
