48MB VRAM (Quick answer if possible, please o.o)

Featured Replies

Hey guys!

I've just gotten my new laptop. I set up GTA4 like I have it on my desktop computer. I had to use a compatibility mode to get it running, it starts at least. But when I want to change my video options, it says that I only have 48MB VRAM. Well.. I have a Nvidia GeForce GTX850M in the laptop, so, 48MB... just... just can't be everything. It has 4GB actually.

So, how to fix this issue?

A commandline with -percentvidmem 100 and -nomemrestrict might work.

I have a commandline, those 2 lines are in it (and some more). :/

If you have that commandline set up then the amount of memory it displays shouldn't really matter. You should be able to crank up your settings past the cap and run it perfectly. If the problem is you can't push past that cap still then you may have typed the commandline wrong or multiple commandlines may be conflicting. I would suggest that the video display isn't showing the true VRAM that the game is using anyway, I doubt GTA4 would even run on 48MB of VRAM.

Well, I set "-availablevidmem" to 4, now it's 96MB instead of 48. o.o

Edit: And it crashes when I loaded the game, wtf.. Hate Windows 8 >:(

Worth keeping in mind you have a mobile card, and as such really only have as much as the system is willing to allocate at any time.  How much physical RAM do you have?  If you only have like 4-6GB of physical RAM it's most unlikely going to allocate anything past probably 2GB total for actual GPU use, though I would think you would be getting higher than 100MB at least showing.

Alright:

Windows 8.1 x64
Nvidia GeForce GTX 850M 4GB
8GB RAM
Intel Core i5-4210U 4x1.7Ghz (Boosted up to 2.7)
Commandline:

-nomomrestrict

-norestrictions

-percentvidmem 100

-availablevidmem 4 (As I said, with "4" I get 96MB of VRAM ingame, with "2" only 48MB)

-noprecache

-novblank

-windowed

Nevermind, I set the availablevidmem to 100 and it says that I can use ~2400 MB now. And I just reinstalled GTA4, uninstalled GFWL, installed the newer version of GFWL and patched GTA4 to 1.0.7.0. Works (kind of) fine now.

Interesting, my computer isn't even that powerful, and I can run GTA4 maxed out with ENB's. I would like to note that your CPU isn't the best though. Glad to hear its working at least a little now, give us a shout if anything else goes wrong.

Yep, my CPU makes my game lagg a little bit (sometimes hard for 2 seconds) on highest settings even tho my graphics card should be powerful enough. But maybe GTA4 doesn't use it completely/correctly. I expected it to work with an ENB, but it doesn't. But as long as it works, it's fine for me. When I'm at home, I play GT4 with my tower anyways (but I don't understand why it works better with a worse graphics card, maybe the kickass processor handles it?).
