Cannot Close GTA IV

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm having a problem with closing the game after a crash. So when the game crashes, I get a black screen. I am unable to click on anything. I go to the task manager via CTRL ALT DEL in an attempt to close the game, but when I select the task manager, I'm still stuck with a black screen on my desktop. The only option I've had is to restart my computer.... Any help?

If my mods list is needed here, let me know. Thank you in advance.

I've gotten that too.

Despite the fact the task manager is covered by a black screen, in my case, I can see my taskbar.

I hover my mouse over the task manager's icon on the toolbar until the "preview" of the window appears.

I then put my mouse over that window, so the black screen temporarily disappears, and I can see the task manager.

I then use my arrow keys to select GTA IV under Apps.

I then remove my mouse cursor from the icon in the toolbar.

Having highlighted GTA IV, I then press a button on my keyboard (box with 3 lines in it, next to windows key) so that a menu pops up.

Pressing this key, is the same as a right click on the mouse.

I then use my arrow keys again, to select "End Task" and then press Enter.

This process (which is hopefully easy to read/ understand) works pretty much the majority of the time for me.

For me, if all else fails, I sign out of my Account on my PC, through CTRL + ALT + DEL, wait a few mins, and then sign back in.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but when my GTA crashes, and I attempt to end it using task manager, and get the black screen, that process above works for me.

The onyl answer I have is more a suggestion. Run a commandline for windowed mode, and if/when you do crash, alt-tab, press META+R, then type "cmd". On the command line instance that generates, type the following:

taskkill -t -f -im launchgtaiv.exe

I typically keep a command line instance open at all times. If you run GTA4 as administrator, you'll need to run the command line instance as an administrator.
