Need help with computer

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have a dell xps 720 (I know it's old) and I am trying to figure out why it can't handle gta iv very well. I have lcpdfr installed and all the usual trainer and uk police cars installed too. The game runs at 20 frames or lower in the city area and 30 max by the sea roads.

Would anyone be able to tell me why it is not working well and if so what can I do to fix it? Also if nothing can be done what is a reasonable priced computer that i could get in Scotland?

Specs:

Dell xps 720

Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6800(quad core)

500gb hard drive

Nvidia gtx 650

8gb ram

Thanks in advance

Alex

It's probably a combination of everything. The CPU is old, therefore the motherboard and the hard drive is probably running an old version of SATA which slows down data transfer rate. The RAM would be old too, again having a slower data transfer rate. And the version of PCI express would be old too, capping graphical performance. For a modern computer, the GTX 650ti is mediocre by gaming standards, but would allow you to get medium to possibly high details if the rest of your hardware was fine.

Thanks I am planing on saving up £400 for an Alienware desktop, however I am only sixteen and have £270 so I have some saving to do!

Don't waste your money..

Head to youtube and find a tutorial on building a PC yourself. It's super easy and doesn't require much effort, but you'll be able to get yourself a much better computer for the same price or even less.

I built my first computer at 14. Cost me £500 but would've been worth over £900 at the time.

As Tom said, don't waste your money on an Alienware PC. You pay for the name, not the performance. I had a friend who bought a $1,200 Alienware computer and gets the same performance I get out of a $600 computer. Building your own is the best bet for anyone.

All Alienware is, is a Dell wrapped up in a pretty plastic box.

Build your own. It will be way more worth it for your money.
