I saw the President being escorted after the Boston Marathon.

Yeah, I've seen quite a few of those "small" NYPD-escorts with around 4-6 vehicles once in a while when I visit NYC, the presidential escort in Stockholm (Sweden - Last year in september). Also a couple of small Sheriff convoys in Florida (where I used to live).

Example of those small NYPD-escorts

Just wanted to add on I saw one of these too, but instead of the SWAT Van it was two long limousines, maybe the mayor? I had a recording, I wonder if I still have it.

EDIT: Here's a nice police escort the Massachusetts State Police did post Boston Bombings

Funerals are often done by a funeral division of the motor division of the police. At least where I live they have special uniforms and vehicles with amber and blue lights with one front facing purple light.

I once saw the presidential escort by air. Two attack helis, a few chinooks and the two marine one's with two more attacks in the rear. Pretty neat

Interesting to hear that over in the US you have police escorts for funerals. To me that would seem really strange, never seen one for a funeral over here. Any reason as to why the do it? Because to me it would seem strange to have the police escorting a funeral. It doesn't really make sense (except for things like traffic congestion).

I'm surprised too that people from the US are saying they've seen escorts for funerals. Now I"m sure every state is different but here in Wisconsin they don't do that anymore. They use to, because I can remember seeing it when I was young but its been years and years since I've seen one for a funeral.

As for what I've seen - there was one occasion about 2 years ago. I was driving on the freeway probably around 12:00 at night and traffic slowly started to slow down. There wasn't much traffic, about what you would expect for midnight. All the sudden I notice 4 Wisconsin Highway Patrol cruisers (all CVPIs) up ahead, lights flashing, and one was in each of the 3 lanes blocking traffic and the fourth was along side the road. They were moving, slowly, probably 25-30 MPH and just kept on driving for a long time. Like a rolling road block. Then all the sudden we approached a construction site and the lanes slowly closed from 3 down to 1 and the troopers broke off as the lanes closed. So I'm assuming they were in the process of closing those lanes for construction and needed to slow traffic down for the time being until they could safely get things closed up. That was pretty cool as I was fairly close to the front so I got to see the cruisers the whole time.

Just wanted to add on I saw one of these too, but instead of the SWAT Van it was two long limousines, maybe the mayor? I had a recording, I wonder if I still have it.

IMO, that doesn't count as an escort; escorts are either to protect a VIP or for an honor guard, while that was an emergency response (if you look at the description, it wasn't really "post bombings", it was directly responding to them). It's not unusual for police special units to respond in a convoy to make sure all the officers and equipment arrive together - the concern isn't that someone will attack the unit, it's that the whole team needs to get there together to be fully effective. Also, marked cars can be more visibly police vehicles, which can help get people to recognize it as a police unit.

Escorts are only legal in a few places, I don't see why a police officer would want to do that, it's gross because most cops are male........if you guys saw that you need help.

I see your point. I knew exactly what this convoy was for, it was carrying the STOP (SWAT) Team and some high ranking state police officials out of Framingham (State Police HQ) but you're right, this technically isn't really an escort because they're not transporting a VIP civilian/political leader ect. I just decided to post it because it was relevant to the conversation topic (Police en route, en masse).

Post bombings I meant directly after the event took place, which perhaps was a poor choice of words on my part.
