Going out to buy new graphics card for 1.0.. Suggestions?

Featured Replies

I currently have 3gb of ram and a Geoforce 550ti and its starting to lag and get crappy so its time for a new one. I have $300.00 to spend and im going to bestbuy to pick one out. Should I upgrade my Ram too or is 3gb plenty??... Im so excited for Lcpdfr 1.0 ive been waiting forever just like all of you! The Mod team did a great job from what ive seen! If Lcpdfr was a stock id invest because unique ideas like this definetly grow over the years! I see a bright future for the mod team of Lcpdfr!

Hi there.

I would personally upgrade your RAM to at least 8 gigs for better performance.

For cards, I've always liked EVGA and Nvidia products. A GTX 670 or a GTX 760 may be good cards to consider for the money.

RAM man, it is DEFINITELY your RAM. I have a 560 ti (slightly better) and i run it on high no problems. I have 8gb of ram, the thing is, with how GTA was optimized you need RAM definitely atleast 6gb of ram. Youll notice a huge difference. As for a new Card, The 660 Ti would be a great choice, i believe its right around $200. Ram is extremely inexpensive these days. If you need any help lemme know!

I have this exact Ram, and it works great. Like original said, 8gb is great, if you have to buy both i think 6 would suffice however, if you can afford 8 though, go for it.

That's the card I'd buy, you even get two free ($60) games, i have the same card just in 560 form. All under $300 ;) hope it helps!

Upgrade to 8GB of 1600MHz RAM preferrably with two modules. If your motherboard supports dual-channel then this will increase performance.

As for a card, a GTX 660 Ti will do just fine. For better performance I recommend the GTX 760. There's a GTX 760 2GB for $250 that comes with free Splinter Cell Blacklist and AC4.

Video card aside, you need memory. 3GB is nothing these days. My phone has 2GB.

If you only have $300 to spend, do it on RAM. Also, stay away from best buy for PC components. It's worth the few days wait to buy online for two big reasons: Price, and selection.

Trust me, I'm an Engineer :)

You'll definitely see the biggest improvement in RAM. That's for sure. Good luck!

You could make your own thread, too. :P

Anyways, at the OP: a 760 or 660 ti would be an ideal graphics card (Nvidia based), or maybe a 7870 or 7950 (Radeon based). 8GB memory or higher would be nice to have, aswell, but definitely get more memory/RAM.

As for this guy I am replying to, you shouldn't have any problems. You might be running too much in the background or not have enough wattage. Your CPU or motherboard might also been screwing with the card and doesn't have enough power to work with it, or vice-versa.

I am not sure why everyone is saying you should upgrade your ram.

Without getting your full system specifications.

What is your processor/cpu, motherboard, hard drive model (if you have the specs, speed, cache, post them), power supply?

What operating system are you running? Windows Vista/7/8? What version is it 32 or 64bit?

No one should be recommending you to buy new ram without first knowing if your motherboard can support more memory/ram and if your operating system will recognize more than 3GB of ram.

Further more (according to Wikipedia) the 550ti was released March 15, 2011.

That was over 2 years and 9 months ago, which means there is a possibility that motherboard/cpu of that system is 2 to 3 old (or older).

In which case, I would not advise in spending money in an outdated technology and/or in something that may be near end of life.

Without all the details and assuming your system is 2 to 3 years old.

Your best bet would be to upgrade your video within budget and system capabilities (power supply requirements).

Then in a few months after you have saved up some cash and the newer technology is out (DDR4) you can re-evaluate and purchase newer hardware (possibly a new motherboard, cpu, ram, powersupply, etc)

That said, consider the following.

Bestbuy will price match, I know how the instant gratification outweighs waiting.

I would advise on purchasing a mid-range graphics card somewhere between 200-300 USD. I suggest this, versus buying the highest end 400-600 card, as technology advances pretty quickly and you will end up wishing/waiting the best next time and having to spend the same amount in 6 months to a year.

By buying the mid-range card, it is a lot easier to upgrade it, every two to three years and still have a decent system.

However, if you have the funds and want to buy the best, by all means go ahead.

Lastly, every brand from time to time, makes a crappy model or two. Do your research!

Hope this helps, good luck and happy holidays!

The best card you could have gotten (before the AMD cards prices skyrocketed) would have been a R9 280X non reference cooling.

A good alternative is a GTX 770 those go for about $330 depending on the card.

If it absolutely MUST be under $300 then a GTX 760 or a R9 270X would be a good buy at a good price.

Good card. A bit overpriced though IMO. EVGA makes awesome stuff though.

This is pretty much AMDs equivalent http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125496

About the same performance (only about 200 score off on 3Dmark 760 score is ~8700 and the 270x is ~8500).

Cheaper. (if you wanna try out AMD instead of Nvidia)

I thought I should step in because I personally have a 550 Ti. It's actually a great piece of hardware for GTA4, but if you're going to be playing stuff like BF4 or ARMA 3, it's time for an upgrade. But above ALL, upgrade your RAM. I have 8GB DDR3 and it's fantastic, can run any game without running out of RAM. Good luck and have fun! I sure am with LCPDFR 1.0 :D
