ugh, apparently we can't all learn to get along. No apparently we can't. We all have to think that this person is worse then us because of their race or religion.

Racism: Is when a person is discriminated by thir color of skin, let's say a white man tells a black man "F******* n****a, how would you react if you were the black man? Angry? Sad? It's the same thing if some one tells a boy he can't be Santa just because he is black. Nobody knows how Santa looks, so why would the teacher tell him that?

So what if Santa is one nationality or color? This kid wanted to be Santa in this case, and the teacher turned that around and said no, your are this nationality, you can't.

What if it was Easter, and you came to school as a bunny. Your teacher said, "No, you can't be the Easter bunny, you're a human!" and as ridiculous as it sounds, that's how ridiculous it is! I want to be the Easter Bunny (or in this case, Santa) but I can't because I am one nationality or color or species!

If I got the article correct, student was wondering why Santa is always white, and never black, and the teacher replied that Sants is who he is. He didn't deny student's rights to dress like Santa or whatever. For me, Santa is who he is too. Everyone, girls, boys, Africans, Caucasians, can dress like a rabbit, but that won't make them rabbits. Every one can dress like Santa, but that won't make them Santa.

You can dress as Santa, but won't be Santa, not because of race, but because Santa is a fictional character (and if you think the character has anything to do with St. Nicholas, he may have at some point, but not anymore). And saying "No, your race disqualifies you from being this fictional character" is pretty much grade-A racism. There's no reason for the character to have to be white. Skin color is not an important attribute of the character. It actually pretty much never is. Sometimes, it might matter - portraying a Southern slaveowner? A black character would be making a big statement. But that's because race actually *matters* there; it has no relevance to "guy, lives at the North Pole, gives everyone presents".

not agreeing with the teacher did

but

Santa has alway's been white since my parent's were kid's and that's going on 64 year's if you look at it through the course of  human history Santa has always been white and should remain white     ( and no I'm not racist)

Why the hell do people gotta pick on little stupid shit like oh let's change santa's skin color and ethnicity  its   the freakin holidays

if you that freakin bored you gotta  pick on little shit like  that   ( get slapped upside you head for 1  ) go freakin find something better to do with your time like job social life helping out less fortunate people

Right, it's the holidays. Why is a teacher telling a 14-year-old that "no, you can't be Santa because you're the wrong color". Santa's traditional depiction as white is at least partly due to the fact that for a very long time (and to some degree, even today), "white" was the default race. Saying that a race assigned by default matters is stupid. Telling a 14-year-old that their costume is not acceptable due to their skin color is the sort of thing that makes me wonder how they got to be a teacher.

The student didn't decide "Oh, I'll be a black Santa". The student decided "Oh, I'll be Santa". The teacher brought race into it.

If you don't care and think it's a waste of time, why are YOU wasting your time with this?

(by the way, for a character whose modern depiction is at most 200 years old, saying "through the course of human history" is just a teensy bit grandiose)

I agree with cp here, the teacher brought race into the discussion. This is just sad how that person got to be a teacher in the first place.

it is very sad. This person should not be a teacher
