PC Rebooting Under Graphical Stress

Featured Replies

I've never had to turn to anyone for help when it comes to computers, since I consider myself to be very experienced, but this problem has really got my scratching my head. If anyone could help me out with some advice, I'd be truly grateful.

My current build is around 2 years old. All the parts were brand new at the time.

- GTX 560Ti Twin Frozr II 1GB
- Corsair 600W Builder Series PSU
- AMD phenom ii x4 960t black edition
(Nothing OC'd all stock)

Recently, I've been unable to apply any graphical stress whatsoever to my PC. As soon as I begin driving during the first mission on GTA, my PC reboots without any error shown on screen. I am also unable to begin a test with FurMark. As soon as I press GO, the PC reboots.

However, I have tried testing both the CPU and the GPU at the same time using "heavyload" with no problem at all. Does this software test the GPU in a different way or something?

Things I've tested/checked/tried

  • Checked Temperatures - All fine
  • Checked hardware + connections - All fine
  • Cleaned hardware - Still problem persists
  • Re-installed drivers - All fine
  • Disabling reboot on system failure - Still restarts, no error shown
  • Tested CPU - Works fine during 100% load
  • Re-installed windows with just the graphics drivers and Furmark - Problem still persists

Any ideas?

Not that I can see. It just shows "The previous system shutdown at 22:17:06 on ‎15/‎12/‎2013 was unexpected." and "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."

I've saved the reports in case you would like to see them yourself, that way you can read all the crap that I don't understand lol. It's an actual event log file:

I really appreciate your help.

Uh huh, I've removed my graphics card, cleaned it up the best I could, however there's still a little dust that I can't get too.

Besides, the temps are fine, and the reboots aren't spontaneous, so I kind of ruled that out a long time ago.

Alright, just checking. Really weird issue. Could be OS related. I'll look through that log when I have the time.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

May install on a new hard drive and go from there.

Also, just tested my RAM, all fine there.

You can check for corrupt OS files with an SFC scan.

I checked the files using sfc /scannow yesterday with no problems.

I re-installed windows on a blank hard drive I had lying around and the problem persists when attempting a benchmark with furnark.

However, I've downloaded the heaven benchmark, and that works just fine. It reaches 100fps on ultra, and the temperature of my gpu reaches about 65 degrees, but no shutdown.

This is weird. It shuts down with GTA and furnark, but not with the heaven benchmark or heavyload benchmark.

Assuming you checked the CPU temperature, but did you check the GPU temperature?

Your graphics card could be failing or your hard drive if it also shuts off and reboots during high performance desktop work. If this is a hand built desktop another idea is the GPU is drawing too much power.

If the shutdown occurs on graphical stress not involving games than it can be an array of issues like GPU or the OS itself.

Try running this for 30 minutes http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/ if it shuts off then its a GPU issue only. Overheating, not enough power or faulty GPU.

Your GPU or power supply is faulty/insufficient, try and update the drivers and go from there.

I've got a GTX 560Ti, definitely sufficient enough to at least start a benchmark.

As I've already said, I've re-installed the latest drivers to no avail.

Having a GTA 560TI does not mean your power supply is sufficient/faulty.

I would personally just have it RMA'd if your power supply isn't faulty and can hold the card.

I realise that, but the GTX 560Ti uses 170W under max load. And a 500W PSU is recommended. My PSU is of a good brand, and is 100W over the minimum recommendation.

I appreciate your help though. I'm gonna borrow my friends spare 500W PSU and try it with that when I see him later this week, If the problem still persists, I'll RMA the card I think.

Thats generally how you're suppose to test the faulty power supply issue.

If everything checks out its probably the card. Try the BETA Drivers Nvidia offers also sometimes its a problem with running a new OS like Windows 8.

If someone helped you assemble it make sure all the components are tightly connected. I remember someone asked if they could help me I said sure and they ended up bending all the CPU pins on the motherboard (somehow?).

Good luck!

I know, I just haven't been able to get my hands on a spare one till now.

I tested the voltages using my multimeter and they all seem normal.

I will do. I'm using windows 7 though.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

EDIT: Nah, I build it myself, I'm fairly experienced and I've already checked all the parts are connected properly.

If it was a hardware issue, windows would probably know about it. The log you gave is too short to tell anything, please include all sections (Applications, System, etc.) for about 30 minutes before the shutdown too.

Please do not PM me unless really necessary (knowing you helps). If you think you need my attention in a topic, tag me.

Okay. So I've included the logs from the moment the PC was fired up till the problem occured, and then the events that occured once I powered up again to retrieve the logs.

Thanks guys. I appreciate your help.

I can only see events for like 1 minute after you started your PC. Is that really all?

Uh huh. It's a new installation on a new hard drive. The only programs are my graphical drivers and Furmark.

What I mean is, you said the logs are from "the moment the PC was fired up till the problem occured, and then the events that occured once I powered up again to retrieve the logs." To me it looks like you only included the last part, but forgot to include the part from starting to the problem occuring.
