Firefighters won't put out fires on property, whose owners don't pay the fee. However they will still rescue people on those properties.

My opinion is that if that fire department has the main responsibility for that specific area and if they don't put out that fire, it will most likely spread to other buildings and it may cause a massive fire unless they get assistance from another F.D.

You'd think those necessary services was funded by the local city or county who collected the money from council tax and not "fees" like this, makes me happy to live in a place where we're well taken care of.

I agree, I never heard of having to pay a fee. I always thought funding came from the town/county/district. I wonder if system is used else where...?

They ought to adjust the council/county/city budget and tax accordingly so that vital services can be provided to all citizens regardless of the situation.

 

They alternatively could refuse to respond any MVA's involving out-of-towners as they don't pay a fee either.

I think the fee only refers to the property of the houses/businesses. It could be for insurance purposes. I think its mainly for fires, not other emergencies.

No its a illegal and I remember seeing this I think she ended up filing a law suit and getting compensated by the town or city what ever it was.

 

Thats like a cop not arresting the aggressor in a domestic violence unless the victim paid the cop.

I know that quite a while ago (around 100 years or so) many communities in Canada would have fire departments that were not funded by the state. Homeowners would need to pay a yearly membership fee and would get an iron sign they would put on their house. If the fire department came around and you had no sign, they would let your house burn down.

That's horrible.... Life's not always fair, but I've always seen firefighters as good people, don't see how they could do that to a person. Even if the person didn't pay the "fee".     

A majority of volunteer departments get little to no compensation for the SACRIFICE they partake in day in, day out. While it may seem hostile for them to state they "will not put out fires on properties who do not pay the fee," it is quite within their right to state such a thing. 9/10 however, if a house was on fire and the only thing stopping them from putting it out was the unwillingness to pay the fee...9/10 I question the ability of the men to simply standby and let the house burn..

 

The VFD my father is a part of gets payed $15 a call. That is the only compensation they receive for their efforts. In the rural area that he lives in the only payed department is well over 30 minutes away in every direction. I have never once heard them refusing to put out a fire because of a failure to pay a fee, sounds ridiculous to me, but as I have said payed firemen receive a pretty well off compensation for the sacrifice they take daily, while volunteers do it without.

If you don't pay that 'fee' then yes FD can stand by and do nothing, they'll wet down the nearby buildings and ready themselves to spring into action as soon as the next build catches on fire (or about to). If that next building has paid that fee.

 

People don't realize how expensive these services are. Sure there are some fincanical problems with how the city and/or state handles those budgets (which i why they seem way underfunded).

 

Politions these days though........you're voting between a few bowls of shit more and more frequently, the only difference is the smell lol. There are a good few but don't last long in the 'system'.

Personally I know in one of the rural areas around where I live the lack of county funding has led to there not being a county or municipal FD to serve that area.  For that reason there are two "Fire Departments" that are actually for profit corperations operating to fill that lack of service.  You pay yearly and if you have an emergency whatever one you pay will come to you.  One of those departments here is Grants Pass Rural Fire Department.  They have terrible equipment and no training.  Here's a video:
