GTA IV Wikipedia Article Edit War

Featured Replies

I found this on Wikipedia and thought it was pretty funny! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Lamest_edit_wars#Grand_Theft_Auto_IV

Text:

Is Niko Bellic (the main character) Serbian, Slovak, Bosnian, Croatian, Russian, or from some unnamed Eastern European country? Reliable sources do not agree on the matter (with those written pre-launch suggesting the character is Russian, and post-launch Serbian or Croatian), and the actual game itself is just ambiguous enough about the subject to create dissent (and of course this is a part of the world where nationalist feelings run high, see Balkanization).

At one point, the article contained five consecutive citations, repeated each of the three times the character's nationality is mentioned, totalling a whopping fifteen citation numbers throughout the article to justify the purported nationality of a fictional video game character. The article reached eventual consensus on the nationality issue (unknown) and the name of the war (an unknown war in Eastern Europe) based on the author(s) having not revealed the information about the character. Despite it now being five years since the game's release, and despite edit notices and warning text in the article body, the subject still receives many edits a year, and the subject is repeatedly raised on the article talk page. Rumour has it[citation needed] this uncertainty was deliberately planned all along by the author(s), to pave the way for the "more realistic GTA VI: Wiki_City_wars" (working title).

From my understanding, he's Serbian, and "the war" he was in was the Kosovo war, fought from February 1998 to June 1999. This article can explain a lot too: http://gta.wikia.com/Niko_Bellic

They never mention anything specifically, other than him speaking Serbia, I think. But yes, most likely those conflicts are what is being referred to.

I believe there was other things (such as the etymology of his last name) that cast doubt on the Serbian theory. See my response to mustu below:

Basically, people are arguing over which country a fictional game character is from, when the developers probably didn't even design him with a specific country in mind. They probably took traits from different countries and combined them into Niko.

Wow. I agree with Jay on this one. That's just sad and in my opinion, some of the things they said sounded like it was written by a bored 10 year old with good vocabulary ;P
