Hey, this is my first post and I've got dumb new guy questions. I've been a moderator on a local car forum for a few years and always roll my eyes when I read stupid questions...but right now I'm that guy.

 

 

 

Can my PC handle LCPDFR?

 

I've always wanted to play LCPDFR since I first saw it a while back, but didn't have a PC to play it on (yeah, I know, Mac owner) which meant that I'd have to buy a whole computer which wasn't too appealing. But I found a (fully working!) Dell in my parents basement that they no longer use -> score. Can't beat a free computer, right? 

 

 

It's a 2005 Dell Dimension 4700 and the specs apparently are:

 

Pentium 4 3GHz processor

512MG RAM

160GB HDD

 

Video card (???)

Intel GMA 900 Dynamic Video Memory Technology 3.0

224MB max video memory

So does it look like this thing has the chops to run GTA IV and the LCPDFR mod successfully? I'm not a computer guy, hence why I own a MacBook Air , but I really want to play this. For what it's worth, I'm going to wipe the hard drive and restore it to factory specs, then use it only for LCPDFR.

 

 

 

 

How do I go about installing it and getting everything to work?

 

Obviously I buy GTA IV for PC and then download the LCPDFR file. My guess is that there's a ReadMe to help me along with the install? Back when I was in middle school, I had Vice City on my parents previous computer and downloaded a mod that added a second island, new skins for the cars, etc., so I'm sure that if I got that to work back in the day...I can probably do it now lol.

 

But I've read that you need a trainer (whatever that is?) and I've also read that you don't need one. Which is it? What does a trainer do?

 

My guess is that the lighting mods available will be really taxing on the computer? I love the lighting mods I've seen on YouTube, but I get the feeling they might crash the game if I use them. Is this something to worry about?

 

Is there an FAQ section I could reference for these questions instead of bothering you?

No it will not work, :/

You need a better CPU, GPU, RAM..... A better computer.

 

You can buy a good by asking help in this thread: 

 

Just ask what is the cheapest computer which can run IV on high settings which a good ENB. I hope this is going to help!

Buddy, I'm not even sure if GTA IV will run on a computer like that! Don't take any offence or anything, but such a game is thirsty for CPU and RAM. Alternatively, you could buy Windows for your Mac and you will certainly be able to run GTA IV.

Although speaking about your free PC, don't throw it away, it will certainly come in useful if you join a gaming community and they use TS etc.

Thanks for the responses, folks! I honestly figured this would be the case, so I'm not too broken up about it. Maybe I'll play a simpler game on it, like Minecraft or something. Ha.

What do you mean by TS? 

 

You bring up an interesting point, installing a partition like BootCamp and running Windows isn't necessarily out of the question. The biggest issue is that my MacBook Air is the super thin one so doesn't have a CD drive. But I think my parents have an external drive that they needed once for some reason, so that takes care of running the hardware. 

 

Now, since this laptop isn't optimized for gaming will it even be up to the task? To keep the price down, which is relative since this was still way overpriced like every Apple product, I only opted for the solid state hard drive because SSHDs are totally bitchin'. Since I had no intentions of using it for gaming, I left everything else as standard. 

 

It's a mid-2012 model running OS X Snow Leopard.

 

 

1.8 GHz Intel Core i5 processor

4 GB 1600MHz DDR3 solid state hard drive

Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB

 

My only fear is that since I don't think it's too heavy on performance, running a partition with Windows and GTA IV and LCPDFR could be too much for the thing to handle. Any ideas?

And that Mac isn't good, as it's processor isn't good enough. GTA IV needs a high CPU if you want to run it on max. And a good CPU if you want to run it.

If you can buy a new PC, what is your budget?

I work on and I get 30-50 FPS with a VERY high grade ENB

I disagree with you @Grants Matos. I would recommend building your own computer but only if you have a spare £1000 otherwise, buy yourself a gaming laptop or PC. As @iEcosan said what would your budget be if you did want to buy a PC?

Gahh I just can't win this. Looks like I'm out of luck here. I don't really have any intention of buying a PC for the sole purpose of gaming, at least right now, because I'm likely moving to another state and going back to school to become a police officer. I love playing GTA and figured this would be a fun way to merge my interests before I made the move.

 

But if I'm looking at $500+ just to get up and running, I have to pass. That's a lot to invest on something that I'm not hardcore about. I've always been a console gamer (and not even especially active at that). Maybe once I'm out of school and have enough disposable income to fund this venture I'll be back with the proper hardware to get some LCPDFR going. Heck, by then, maybe there will be a functional police mod for GTA V. LSPDFR anyone?! Eh? Ehhh?? Until then, I'll just have to live vicariously through videos you guys upload to YouTube.

Well you could actually try it on that laptop - I know it would suck if you buy windows and the game for it then it doesn't work, but it may be possible. My old computer has an Intel Pentium processor, 4 GB ram, and Intel HD Graphics like 1000 (with 56 MB dedicated memory). It ran GTA IV on the lowest settings with a command line.

That's arguably worse than the PC specs you posted because although the Pentium 4 is only a single core CPU, it has nearly double the clock speed of a base MacBook Air. The MacBook Air was designed to be thin, not to be a performance champ. It also once again has no graphics card, and a stressful game could cause the computer to overheat since Mac laptops have very little in the way of ventilation (just the gap between the monitor and chassis) with the MacBook Air being the smallest of them all. And on top of all that, the specs don't even meet the minimum requirements. I'd advise either look into buying or building a new PC, or scrapping your gaming plans for now.
