you can be in charge without shouting at people and sticking a gun in there face.

Some people you use nothing but force but rarely, 1 in a 100 over here.

It must be an American thing then, we were taught about being in control but maybe for a day out of the 80 days of training I did. You can use brains to more effect than mental muscle.

I remember seeing in the news here in FL i think , that an officer pulled over a 2 men on a vehicle. And when the officer approached the vehicle one of the suspects jumped out with a shotgun and killed him...

Don't start being elitist about countries. He's not the only U.S. resident on these forums. I also don't think he necessarily means physical force on people is the only way to get compliance. He mentioned having presence. That's a very big deal over here. I remember seeing a mini series once about training new hire police officers. One veteran with a newbie partner responded to a call of a protest that was getting out of hand. The newbie was instructed to get them to disperse. He asked politely and got little to no compliance out of it. The veteran joined in and started shouting to move along, clear the area, etc. He didn't do this by being nasty. But he raised his voice and took an assertive tone that suggests he means business. That's a very important thing no matter what country you're from.

We have a different policing model in Britain because 1) the judicial system differs and most importantly 2) the policing needs differ. Being a police officer is all about adapting to different challenges. One policing style cannot work everywhere, policing must be adaptable. My point? Give us the right intelligence and tools and we would fit right in.
