GTA 4 Multiplayer internet speed

Featured Replies

I was wondering how fast does your internet need to be when playing GTA in multiplayer. Does it use the upload speed or the download speed? Sorry, I don't really know how to clearly explain it but I can't find nothing on the internet about it.

It's a matter of opinion, I suppose. Technically DSL connections will work, which are about 1.5Mbps, but 1.5Mbps isn't the constant speed, it fluctuates. So I'd recommend a cable connection or fiber connection, which generally run at least about 4 times faster.

Speeds don't matter as much as latency does (lower latency is better). Notice the picture of a speed test done on my connection. You have a download speed, which is the number most often used to market the plan you will purchase. There is upload speed and PING. This is the number that you want as low as possible and it varies for many reasons (mostly location).

Is there a specific reason your looking for the minimum?

If its for you, just go by your budget and get as much as you can afford. You can get good gaming speeds fairly cheap these days.

If it's not for you and I missed the whole point of your question, I apologize.

I have FIOS Quantum 50, get one of these and you will be good.

My results:

They're both important. Ping is the time it takes for a packet of information to get sent to the server, then get a response sent back to the client. Latency is a one way measurement. In laymen terms; it's basically a way of measuring the delay time between the action you perform and what happens on screen. Bandwidth is how much throughput you have for information. As an example, the bigger the straw you drink through, the quicker you can drink your milk. There's no difference in delay time when drinking your milk depending on what straw you use. If you have a narrow straw, it's going to take you longer to drink it. If you have horrible download speed, it doesn't matter how fast the communication between server and client is; your connection won't be able to sort and distribute the packets in a timely manner when you have limited bandwidth available to you.

The question here is how much bandwidth is enough. Technically for gaming, 1.5Mbps is enough, but that's going to be changing as games get more complex, and developers are expecting more and more people to have better internet connections these days. DSL can provide 1.5Mbps, but only at peak speeds. It doesn't continually run at 1.5Mbps. Netflix wants you to have about 5Mbps to buffer your movies ahead of time, thereby allowing you to stream HD content smoothly. All that being said; if you have enough money for a decent gaming computer, you probably have enough to afford a decent internet connection too.

Just to reiterate your PC has almost nothing to do with Internet speeds. That said, those speeds you two posted are still more than sufficient for online gaming.

So, technically, it should read #TeamBadInternet but again it's not that bad.

Well, I already knew that, also, it was during a time that a lot of people in my area were using the internet. I can almost spot when the internet is getting used more locally xD

Same here, it's very noticable when the peak times are where I am. I think I have plenty in reserve, though.

I have 50Mbps down, 25Mbps down fiber. No noticeable improvement in gaming or game downloads (since they're metered) over my 16Mbps down 3Mbps up Comcast connection from the other year. Torrent downloads can go faster, that's about it.
