Gunman holed up with four firefighter hostages in Georgia (suspect killed)

Recommended Posts

SUWANEE, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say a gunman holding fourfirefighters in suburban Atlanta has been shot dead by SWAT members and that all the hostages are slightly injured but should be OK.

Gwinnett County Police CplEdwin Ritter said Wednesday evening that a SWAT officer has been shot in the hand.

Minutes before the police announcement, one big explosion followed by several smaller ones or gunshots were heard in the Suwanee neighborhood about 35 miles northeast of Atlanta.

Police and fire officials say five firefighters responded to what seemed like a routine medical call in Suwanee and were eventually taken hostage by an unidentified suspect inside the house. They say one was let go to move the fire truck.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Four firefighters who responded to what seemed like a routine medical call were being held hostage Wednesday by a gunman who has barricaded himself in a home in suburban Atlanta, authorities said.

Five firefighters responded to the call in Suwanee and were eventually taken hostage by an unidentified suspect inside the house, Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter said. The gunman released one of the firefighters to move a fire truck.

Authorities were not releasing information on what happened inside the home, but did say it doesn't appear any of the firefighters has been hurt.

The gunman's motive was unclear to police and fire officials, and a SWAT team and negotiator have made contact with the suspect.

Fire department Capt. Tommy Rutledge said the medical call seemed routine and firefighters did not believe there was any danger. One engine and one ambulance responded.

"Right now we just want our firefighters to be released. We want them to be able to go home safe to their families," Rutledge told WSB-TV.

Television helicopter footage showed police and fire trucks surrounding the neighborhood of mostly two-story homes and well-kept lawns about 35 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. Residents were not being allowed in to their neighborhood. About 50 bystanders gathered outside the subdivision while police and SWAT officials surrounded the house. According to public records, the home is in foreclosure and has been bank-owned since mid-November.

The firefighters are cross-trained as emergency medical technicians, said Rutledge, who would not speculate on whether there was a real emergency at the home.

"Our firefighters responded to a call they respond to hundreds of times, and that's a medical emergency," he said.

Please get educated before you parrot off false info. The proposed gun bans do nothing but go after weapons based on cosmetic appearances. "Military Grade" is a complete lie, and so is M4A1 being possessed by civilians. The only people that can own full auto's made after 1986, which the M4A1 is, are police departments and dealers that demo at least once a year to police.

Sticks and stones may break bones, but 5.56 fragments on impact.

UPDATE: Gunman has been shot and killed by SWAT. Firefighters are ok but suffered 'superficial' wounds. An officer has been wounded. Police say.

Good. Someone like that deserves to die

Please quote the portion of the post you were replying to. Right now, it looks like you're talking about the SWAT officer who was shot.

Nobody deserves to die, well maybe Hitler, but only because he was literally Hitler, then again not, why not at least try to lean from him.

Justice isn't served by police officers, police officers are there to make sure that those who do commit crimes will be given a chance to stand trial (in broad terms), justice is not something a police officer deals with, police officers do not harm or even kill people because it's justice, they do so because it can be justified, I.E. the officer(s) or any civilians would otherwise suffer injury or death, taking a life is not about the police getting justice, it is because they or the hostages would otherwise be dead, it is an absolute final resort, it's kill or be killed, nothing less.

Justice isn't death either because justice isn't revenge, justice is a punishment befitting of the crime the convicted has been found guilty beyond any reasonable doubt in a court, it's not about "getting back" at the person, death is not justice and will never be justice in my opinion.

Situations like this where the suspect is deceased before he or she can explain themselves or be assessed by medical professionals makes it nearly impossible to understand why he committed these acts.

It's not the "right" outcome, it's not the "perfect" outcome, someone died today, someone lost a loved one.

Our community in general seem to mourn every time a law enforcement officer dies despite many people wanting cops dead, this person has family, friends, co-workers who are now left with so many questions.

I've met a lot of shit people in my life, from school teachers assaulting students all while the headmaster covering it up, to men who beat their girlfriends, people who beat their children, to people who steal and rob, rapists. I don't want any of these people to die, I want them to pay for what they did and trust me ,they all piss me off so very much, but I never for one second wanted them dead because they too are another human.
