Grand Theft Auto V Legacy Exited Unexpectedly

Featured Replies

So look, I'm an advanced user who's played LSPDFR since mid-2018. I know how to get stuff to work, and over the years I've put together a build containing a hundred mods and a couple dozen ELS cars.

Now, GTA V Legacy won't launch at all, after years of working fine.

You got any tips that would be faster than starting over, and adding everything back one-at-a-time to figure out what's broken?

— Thanks

What I've done so far:

I verified the game files (didn't work) and tested a vanilla installation to make sure it wasn't just my rig. It ran the game fine, so I'm led to believe it's something in the game directory or the 'Mods' folder.

Same boat as you. I used to run LSPDFR a lot and could fix just about anything, but I’m rusty now.

Anyway, I recently came back to it and ran into a similar issue—GTA V updated automatically, and suddenly nothing would launch. I had a ton of stuff packed into my mods/update folder that I didn’t want to lose. I tried bringing all my old modded files back (like common/data, dlclist.xml, etc.), but the game would crash on the loading screen every time. No error, just a hard shutdown.

What I ended up doing:

  • I copied the full, clean, updated update folder from the game directory into the mods folder to replace the old one.

  • Then I downloaded and reinstalled most of my previous mods—NaturalVision R, AI behavior mods, gameconfig, visualsettings.dat, etc. I avoided dragging over old files wholesale—almost every one of them was crashing the game, probably due to version mismatch or broken references after the update, I don't know.

The only old file that didn’t break anything was my visualsettings.dat, oddly enough.

So yeah, unfortunately, I couldn’t salvage most of my old setup. Reinstalling fresh was faster than testing a hundred files one by one. It also helped because a lot of older mods are broken now or need updates anyway. Just my take—but I get not wanting to start from scratch; I didn't; I spent two days trying to figure out the broken files one by one before giving up!

P.S. After replacing the update folder in the mods directory, I still had all my old DLC add-on vehicle packs in place. Once the gameconfig and core mods were back in, I could finally edit the dlclist.xml again without crashes. I added back all the lines for my custom police cars/addon DLC pack, and everything loaded fine—got all my old vehicles working again.

Have you tried naming ELS to _ELS but it could be a faulty xml file in ELS

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I –will– start by cataloguing every modded file in the 'update' folder. Then, I'll replace it with a current-build 'update' folder and add everything back, one-by-one. With any luck, that'll be the most efficient fix; I'll report back when I've fixed it.

I was really glad to hear that your vehicles weren't the issue for you, and hopefully none of mine turn out to be incompatible with the current build.

@abandre

Gave it a shot, because testing that only takes a second, but no; that wasn't it. Getting those xml files to do whatever I want is not a challenge for me.

My problem is that some unknown mod within my game — which was just working back in the v1.0.34X era — is now broken. –Sigh– ... the absolute re****ation of Rockstar to push out a new build –and– ruin the old build simultaneously... Just wow. These guys need an award, and very sturdy helmets.

But, I'll spare you my rant and report back with whatever the solution ultimately proves to be.

— Thanks
