Whats a safe, bug free setup?

Featured Replies

Hi, i was wondering, i if i wanted to play LCPD:FR with no bugs, what you recommend to have to get the most experience with the least risk of failing?

I have the steam fully updated GTA IV and all i want is LCPD:FR ELS and some recommended car mods, any ideas guys?

No, this isn't a support thread, i have no problems. I am simply asking what the safest setup without messing up my game would be.

Don't use ELS, and use the "Strobe Mod" instead. Gives the same effect, way less buggy. Use no real-world cars, only updated original ones to keep the memory usage low, and that's all you should do. I use "Traffic Flow" and "No Overtake" scripts as well. I also use the "Tow Service" as well as Coroner, and the Police Helper mod, and the updated police dept Abraxas put together.

For car mods, look at Ekalb's work. Updated GTA cars, look the part and are low on filesize. Abraxas' scripts have few bugs, so you should check those out too.

The more mods you add the more susceptible you are to textures missing, slowdown, crashes, and the like.

I am aware of Abraxas and like his work very much. I'll have a look at Ekalb.

Also, i'll go ahead and install ELS v5, LCPD:FR (For the gazillionth time after multiple game being ruined), and Police Helper and the addons for that.

Also be sure to back up your game so that you don't have to re-install it so much. If I never backed up my files I proabably would have re-installed my game 10 times already. Let me know if you need help on that.

All I do is when I first install GTA4 I install LCPDFR then make a new folder. Simply highlight everything in your GTA4 folder, copy it, then paste it into your new folder. I usually name the second folder GTAIV Backup. Of course after you do that you can go ahead and add all of your mod's into your main GTA folder. That way if my game ever get's messed up to the point of no fixing it I can just refer to this "backup" folder as a fresh copy without the hassle of waiting hours to re-install it. I save all of my car mod files (wtd & wtf) as well. So when I use this backup folder all I have to do is change the directory in Open IV then just replace the files over again in Open. Also I save my Trainer, ELS, and all of my other script mod's to my computer so when I have to use my backup folder I can just copy and paste it where it needs to go without having to re-download these mods over again. If I confused you let me know and i'll make you a YouTube tutorial on it!

Here's a YouTube video however on another way to do it I found.

or another simple way to backup your game, right click the gta iv folder then just "add to archive" (WinRAR) if you use another compression program it might be something different, but to the same effect, it will also take up less space.

Hmm I never thought to do it that way. Thanks for that info! This way seems a bit easier.

compare that to a re-instillation time via Steam and that's ok with me :P

Yeah that's a good point. It takes roughly about 3.5 hours for me to re-install it.
