Browsing through the forums looking to help people, most people who provide support generally don't click on threads that have a decent amount of replies, believing they must've already gotten help. I'm suggesting there is a mandatory feature where someone presses a button and the thread closes, so all the open threads truly need support and everyone can get the help they need.

I think this would be a fabulous idea. It would stop necro-posting and would provide people with a faster way to tell if an issue has been resolved. Even going as far as having a button the OP can press to mark a certain answer as the one that resolved the issue.

We used to have more dedicated handling for support forums. I miss it. I do definitely agree that having "mark as solved" or "mark this post as the answer" features would be nice. Not entirely sure it would prevent necro-posting though, people who are too stupid to read the replies and figure it out are probably too stupid to understand the concept of "this is solved".

Still. Neat idea.

Our board software does provide something like this out of the box, with the ability to upvote answers and mark as solved. We can switch the forum to use a Q&A format.

The problem is the format doesn't make much sense when issues are more complex and require a decent amount of go-between between the person asking for help and people helping.

The good news is the next version of our board software provides support for marking answers without converting the entire forum to a Q&A format, so we should have this when this is released.

And what about a way to mark something as solved?

Glad you think it was a good idea! The thought on Necro-posting was that marking the issue as resolved would automatically close the thread for any further replies.

Will the ability to auto-close a topic work with this?

Day late and a dollar short on this, but I've always just thrown the solution (if I find it myself) or a link to the comment with my solution (if I don't) in the OP of a thread, usually at the top.

That's my personal go-to, though.

Wenn ich Deutsch sprechen, enschultigung: Mein Deutsch ist nicht sehr gut.

If you are replying to something I have posted, you may wish to quote me for faster response times; I do not usually follow threads I reply to.
My personal inbox is not the support forum. I don't mind helping  you with your issues, but you are responsible for your research.  I am not a page in a manual, Google, or the forum search function - look through all three before asking.
A link to a handy how-to guide for getting useful solutions to your problems, and useful answers to your questions. A lot of it may seem irrelevant, but it outlines some great practices to use when seeking answers or solutions.

You aint late at all! All opinions welcome! 🙂

As for what you said, a fairly decent amount of the community don't do that though. As helpful as that would be. Its a brilliant idea, it would just be a matter of getting the rest of the community to adopt that which...lets face it....isnt going to happen. XD
