Up to 10 pedestrians have been struck by a van that witnesses said mounted the curb in Toronto, say police.

The vehicle fled the scene after the incident at a busy intersection in the north of the Canadian city, police say.

The van was located several blocks away, and the driver was taken into custody, according to local media.

It is unclear exactly how many people have been hurt or the extent of their injuries. Police have asked the public to avoid the area.

The incident happened at Yonge Street and Finch Avenue at 13:30 local time (17:30 GMT) on Monday.

The crime scene encompassed a 2km (1.24 mile) stretch of Yonge Street.

Nearby subway services have been halted.

Pictures apparently taken at the scene show police armed with rifles and paramedics treating injured people.

One orange bag, which appears to contain a body, is seen being loaded on to an ambulance.

Toronto police spokeswoman Jenifferjit Sidhu told CBC News that the vehicle was stopped by police.

No description was given of the driver, including name, age, gender, or possible motive.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters: "Obviously we're just learning of the situation in Toronto.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those struck by the van.

No conclusions have been drawn yet, no motive or description of the suspect. Truly a terrible day for Toronto.

Americans saying "Time for van control" incoming :D

Good police work. National news here in my country covers this as well. Tweet from vince is interesting, as you get to see the arrest of the suspect: https://nos.nl/artikel/2228716-busje-rijdt-in-op-voetgangers-toronto-negen-doden.html

Spot-on policework. Officer had all rights to shoot the guy, but he kept his cool and subdued him. Very good job.

London's Mayor is the one banning practical kitchen knives and saying even bakers and chefs and deli workers have " no reason to posses such a deadly item

No he isn't, the ban is relating to things such as Zombie Knives and knuckledusters - the purpose of which is to cause halm towards people. The actual law is that you can't carry a knife in public without a reason, that is known as carrying an offensive weapon, but yeah... go ahead and make out that he is banning equipment that cooks need to carry out their job.

🕵️‍♂️ Always watching, always waiting.

Updated article.

I would like to point out that no political or ideological motive was behind this attack.

The suspect Alek Minassian posted this on his facebook:

"The Incel Rebellion has already begun! We will overthrow all the Chads and Stacys! All hail the Supreme Gentleman Elliot Rodger!"

("Chads and Stacys" refers to attractive men and women who are perceived as better than or unavailable to "incels", which is short for "involuntary celibate".)

The term "incel" refers to a now-banned group on Reddit where young men discussed their lack of sexual activity and attractiveness to women - often blaming women for the problem.

He also posted:

"Private (Recruit) Minassian Infantry 00010, wishing to speak to Sgt 4chan please. C23249161."

It seems that the motive was actually sexual frustration and possibly some sort of psychological condition. I hope all those that died Rest in Peace, for this was not acceptable because you didn't get laid.

I'm not sure if using vehicles as a weapon of mass casualty is new and everyone is jumping on the bandwagon of 'wow, this was easy to do!', or if this has been going on for a long time but not heavily reported.

Major props to the cop that confronted him.  It's incredible that he had so much restraint.  He had to of known what the suspect was trying to do for him [officer] to reach into his car to turn off the siren even.

I need donations to help fund my food addiction. DM for details 😂

I'm not sure why anyone decided to bring up immigration in an attack that, from everything I can find, was carried out by someone born and raised in Ontario. It's crazy levels of off-topic. Posts hidden.
