LAPD changing the light colors on slicktop cars

Featured Replies

In the last time I have seen many LAPD slicktop Crown vics with the previously amber-blue lights changed to red-blue lights,

that's definetly something strange since I have never seen a California emergency vehicle without at least one amber light in the back (except some of the LAPD motorcycles)

I actually prefer the amber-blue lights but I want to hear your opinion on this too.

Strange. @Lundy may know more about this.  It wouldn't make much sense to change the light colors on older vehicles that are closer to retirement.

Yeah, It really doesn't make sense, I thought that it was a camera problem or something at first but the ambers show up on other vehicles just fine and those "new lights" can be seen in multiple different 2017 LA police chase videos

It's probably just the camera. CA state law still does require a rear amber flasher.

Are you sure about that, I've read that it's rather an recommendation, LAPDs motorcycles also often didn't have a amber light in the back. I thought that the indicators on the bikes were used for the amber rear emergency lights but they didn't in the videos I saw4858821562_55e04022c0_b.jpg

Again, no amber lights

You may be right, actually.

I'm not sure how valid of a source this is since it's not an official CVC book or anything, but look at this.

Notice how it does not state EMERGENCY vehicles require rear amber lighting. Only "Warning Vehicles" such as tow trucks or something like a Caltrans service vehicle.

That says "may," not "shall" or "must."

I know, I was just showing this because Lundy hasn't found anything about amber lights on emergency vehicles

I was always under the impression that the mandatory was only a steady red light on an authorized emergency vehicle, hence all those peculiar red lights in CA, and amber was more like an optional thing... (back in the day I enjoyed reading emergency lighting laws of different states just for extra knowledge, way back in the day)

Maybe a few of their cars aren't up to code. Wouldn't be the first time that has ever happened. And it's also hard to tell from the screenshots you provided, since they're from a top down angle from a helicopter.

Also, I might be able to provide a little insight since I'm a lighting designer. When amber lights reach the end of their lifespan, their brightness is drastically reduced and the result is a dim red. Given that it's a crown Vic that's over a decade old, it would make sense that the lighting equipment on the car is in need of being replaced.

They are all "orange", at least the unmarked CVPI. It's the camera, they may look darker and red in some angels and light positions. The highest CVPI on the photo is orange but looks darker and a little red.  Don't know why LAPD uses r/b on their bikes while CHP uses o/b.

I live in California and can attest to this as I have asked several different LAPD and LASD officers that I have seen around various different sections of the area I live in and they all have confirmed that their vehicles have changed from amber-blue to red-blue. They didn't list the reason since they didn't know, but I suspect that since the Arjents, valors, etc are red blue and amber lights, and most of the older slicktop marked supervisor vehicles and slicktop unmarked detective vehicles are red-blue instead of red-amber that they just wanted to have all their fleet vehicles match. But like I said its a suspicion of mine but I could be wrong.
