Freeway traffic jam prewarning

Featured Replies

Hey.

Yesterday on my way home I saw a patrol car on the shoulder of the freeway warning for an upcoming traffic jam, so people can take the offramp if they dont want to wait. Thats nothing special here but I thought about other countries. Does this also happen in other contries? And wich kind of vehicles/technologies are used for that? I know in France exist a lot of those LED screens above the highway so there is no need for that. But I dont have any idea about the US for example.

In germany, the "Highway Police" either uses Vans with big LED screens on the top or regular patrol cars equipped with smaller LEDS panels, where they write "ACHTUNG" - "STAU" (Attantion - Traffic jam).

Oh, and besides that: Are there any models for GTA V with something like that?

Here are some pictures of what I am talking about:

On belt highways in Moscow and Saint Petersburg there are LED displays on overhead ramps which may warn you about a traffic jam ahead. Or may not. Or that warning may be not accurate. Over than that, nobody cares. And even if they care, road police have no vehicles equipped for that. Our government allows drivers to use online maps with traffic jams indicators :whistling:

Most roads here in Sweden have electronic signs on the highway warning for queues. Not that it matters, as there is usually just one route to get wherever one wants to go :) Our police vehicles do not have these signs, only vehicles from the department of transportation does.

Here in the states I've never seen anything like that but there are DOT signs that state times to certain key locations and exit points as well as locations of wrecks ahead and which lanes they are blocking.

Over here in the Netherlands you've got these things to show travel times to a specific point via 2 or more routes so you can pick the fastest one. They are also used for road safety campaign slogans, announcements for road works and road closures and detours:

Then for indicating traffic jams on ring roads near some large cities there's these things, where white means free-flowing and red means delays:

And for indicating lane closures and lowered speed limits (due to construction, traffic jams or other incidents) there are these things installed over many busy highways. Lane closure arrows, as well as the first set of signs displaying a lower speed limit (only normal > 70 and 70 > 50 km/h) have flashing lights in the corner to grab your attention a little more:

I think electronic signs are a pretty good think. Actually, on some routes the also exist in germany but the coversage is way lower than in other countries.

The "mobile system" is also not always used, obviously they dont always have a unit to go out and sit on the side of the street for hours
